U.S. Citizen Freed from Iranian Captivity Amidst Trump’s Controversial Claims

Jul 16 2026

A U.S. citizen has been released from Iranian custody after being held since December 2024, according to President Donald Trump and her lawyer. The announcement came with a twist of political rhetoric, as Trump referred to the release as a “gesture of Goodwill by Iran!” while failing to name the individual involved.

Trump's post on Truth Social claimed, “Iran has allowed an American Citizen, who was wrongfully detained in December of 2024 under the ‘presidency’ of Sleepy Joe Biden, to leave the Country.” He asserted that she is now safe and in good condition outside Iran, framing the event as a diplomatic win for the United States.

However, Mizan, the Iranian judiciary's news outlet, contradicted Trump's claims, stating that no American citizen had been released from custody. Their report dismissed the announcement as false, accusing Trump of spreading misinformation while simultaneously insulting his predecessor.

Jared Genser, a human rights lawyer representing the released individual, identified her as Dena Karari. He expressed relief and excitement over her freedom, attributing it to Trump's relentless efforts. Genser stated, “I am delighted and excited to report that my client U.S. citizen #DenaKarari, who had been trapped in #Iran since December 2024 on bogus charges is now free.”

A senior U.S. official confirmed Karari's release, stating she is safely outside of Iran and expected to return home soon. This official acknowledgment adds a layer of credibility to Genser's claims amidst the conflicting narratives.

Genser provided further context about Karari's situation, revealing that she faced a “coercive exit ban” but was never physically detained. He detailed that she underwent numerous interrogations by the Iranian Intelligence Ministry due to her involvement with the Children of Mehr Foundation, which supports impoverished children in Iran.

The foundation operated under private donor support and had authorization from the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. Genser also called on Iran to drop charges against local Iranians associated with the foundation.

As this situation unfolds, it’s important to note that up to five other Americans remain imprisoned in Iran, including Reza Valizadeh and Kamran Hekmati, both publicly recognized by the State Department as wrongfully detained.
