Ukrainian Drones Devastate Moscow Oil Refinery, Putin's War Machine Crippled

A swarm of Ukrainian drones has smashed through Russia’s air defenses, delivering a brutal strike on the Kapotnya Oil Refinery, a critical asset just 10 miles from the Kremlin.

This facility is a linchpin for Moscow, supplying up to 70% of the oil needs for the city and surrounding regions. The attack intensifies pressure on Russia’s war economy, already reeling from ongoing assaults on its oil infrastructure.

Fuel shortages plague at least 25 regions across Russia, despite the nation being one of the globe's top three oil producers. Ukrainian forces have effectively choked off new fuel supplies to Crimea and other occupied territories through relentless strikes on tankers, trucks, and vital bridges.

The situation escalates as world leaders convene at the G7 summit, where Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy discusses strategies to compel Russia into peace negotiations.

Fuel blockades raise serious doubts about Russia's capacity to maintain control over these territories. The country was previously forced to halt operations at all four major Moscow airports—Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky—due to crippling jet fuel shortages.

Zelenskyy boasted on X about Ukraine’s long-range capabilities, stating, “This time, the Moscow region felt the reach of Ukraine’s long-range capabilities. An oil refinery was hit at a distance of 500 kilometers.”

He framed the drone strike as a justified retaliation against Russian aggression, declaring, “This is a just response to Russian strikes and to the dragging out of a war that must be ended.”

On his way to the G7 summit, Zelenskyy accused Putin of rejecting peace talks. “We offered Putin to meet anywhere where real decisions could be made to end the war. He doesn’t want that,” he asserted.

He further revealed discussions with the US and France about a potential meeting with Russia during the G7 summit involving all democratic states, but noted that “Putin doesn’t want that either.”

The Russians acknowledged damage to the refinery from the drone assault. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that at least 60 drones were shot down during the attack but confirmed that the oil refinery sustained damage. “Over the past 24 hours, enemy drones have continued to attack Moscow,” he stated.

“One of the drones damaged a facility at the Moscow Refinery. There were no casualties. Emergency services are working at the scene.”
