Vaccine Guru's Obsession Leads to Scientist's Dismissal After Gun Joke

A high-profile vaccine expert allegedly orchestrated the firing of a Northwell Health scientist after she rejected his advances and joked about firearms, according to her lawsuit.

Peter Hotez, a molecular biologist and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Houston's Baylor College of Medicine, gained notoriety during the COVID-19 pandemic. He is known for his confrontations with Joe Rogan on social media, where he was challenged to debate vaccines against Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

In 2024, Hotez's questionable behavior surfaced after he participated as a key speaker at a May Northwell Health symposium. He reconnected with Annette Lee, a former graduate school colleague, which she detailed in court documents.

Lee, 64, accused Hotez of persistently propositioning her despite their lack of a close relationship. She claimed that after the symposium, they shared drinks, during which Hotez confessed his long-standing love for her since their graduate school days.

Lee, a leading molecular scientist and dean at Northwell Health's Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine, stated that Hotez reached out multiple times throughout 2024. She recounted his admissions about marital affairs and his excessive purchases of Cialis, which left her disturbed.

In her lawsuit, Lee recounted telling Hotez that he should exercise discretion given his public profile and avoid inappropriate situations. She claimed he insisted he would abandon all his affairs for her, but she firmly rejected any romantic involvement.

In August 2024, after an "intensely stressful day," Lee texted Hotez jokingly suggesting she should be kept away from firearms. She emphasized in her lawsuit that it was clearly a joke and that Hotez should have recognized it as such.

Instead of dismissing the comment, Hotez allegedly reported it to Lee's supervisor. Weeks later, after over 20 years with Northwell, she was terminated from her position.

Lee claims this action was retaliation for her rejections of Hotez's advances, leading to her wrongful termination and discrimination suit against Northwell, seeking unspecified damages.

A spokeswoman for Hotez stated he was reviewing the lawsuit and "categorically denies Dr. Lee’s characterization of the facts." Due to the ongoing litigation, no further comments were provided.

Northwell acknowledged the lawsuit and asserted its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment. A spokeswoman denied any connection between Lee's termination and reports of romantic overtures from anyone.
