‘Weekend Update’ Rips Into Trump’s Iran Assault with Expert Commentary

Mar 01 2026

Colin Jost, host of “Weekend Update,” scrutinized President Donald Trump’s previous statements regarding Iran following the recent U.S. and Israeli military strikes in the region.

“This attack might be a bad idea, I don’t know, I’m not really an expert on Iran. So let’s hear from someone who can explain why we might’ve done it,” Jost remarked, introducing a 2011 video clip of Trump that has gained traction online.

In the clip, Trump criticized then-President Barack Obama, asserting, “Our president will start a war with Iran because he has absolutely no ability to negotiate.” This statement is part of a broader narrative Trump has maintained about his political adversary.

“He’s weak, and he’s ineffective,” Trump added, emphasizing his disdain for Obama’s approach.

Jost nodded in agreement with the clip, quipping, “Yeah, yeah. See, now that’s the Trump I voted for!”

Back in 2011, Trump accused Obama of wanting to initiate military action against Iran to secure a second term, citing Obama’s declining poll numbers as evidence of his desperation.

Currently facing dismal polling figures himself, Trump has justified the recent military offensive as essential, claiming that Iran is developing nuclear weapons capable of reaching the U.S. “soon,” despite a lack of supporting evidence from U.S. intelligence.
