'You Destroyed Lives': Gavin Newsom Slams Departing Border Patrol Chief

Mar 18 2026

California Governor Gavin Newsom unleashed a fierce critique on U.S. Border Patrol official Greg Bovino, who is set to retire at the end of the month. Newsom's message, delivered via X, was unambiguous: “Good riddance. You ruined lives. Spread fear. And spewed hatred.”

In a pointed jab, the governor’s press office shared an illustration depicting the Statue of Liberty leaning down to tell a tearful Bovino, “You’re fired,” echoing a notorious phrase from Donald Trump’s reality show days.

Bovino, who became synonymous with the Trump administration's stringent deportation policies, oversaw operations that ignited widespread protests in Los Angeles last summer. His leadership during these controversial initiatives drew significant public scrutiny.

The criticism intensified following “Operation Midway Blitz,” which saw hundreds of immigration agents and National Guard troops dispatched to Chicago and its suburbs, further polarizing opinions on immigration enforcement.

His tenure faced additional backlash after the tragic deaths of American citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, incidents that fueled outrage against the administration's immigration strategies. Bovino was subsequently removed from his role as Border Patrol’s “commander-at-large” in January.

Despite the controversies, Bovino expressed pride in his service, stating to Breitbart Texas that working with the agency and its officers was “the greatest honor of my entire life.”
