AOC Demands McConnell's Health Update or Immediate Resignation

Jul 24 2026

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has thrown down the gauntlet, demanding that Sen. Mitch McConnell either provide a health update or resign from his post. The 84-year-old senator has been largely silent since his hospitalization on June 14, when he was found unconscious at his Washington, D.C. home.

In the five weeks since that incident, McConnell has only made one public appearance, leaving aides tight-lipped about his condition. Ocasio-Cortez did not hold back, stating, “If he can’t give us an update, he should resign, absolutely.” This comes as she unexpectedly leads in an early 2028 presidential primary poll.

During an exchange with a MeidasTouch reporter on Capitol Hill, Ocasio-Cortez dismissed McConnell's July 12 statement to constituents, where he claimed to be recovering in a rehabilitation facility and planning a return to Congress.

“I think it’s been very clear to people across Kentucky that his ‘update’ was not sufficient,” she asserted. The congresswoman emphasized the critical need for McConnell to be transparent about his ability to perform his duties, especially given the razor-thin margins in congressional votes.

In the wake of McConnell's hospitalization, speculation and dark humor have run rampant. Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Wyoming Sen. John Barroso claimed to have had “lengthy and substantive” conversations with McConnell by phone, but these assertions were met with skepticism.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear reached out to McConnell on July 8 for an update on behalf of constituents but received no response. Four days later, McConnell released a photo of himself sitting up in bed with his wife, Elaine Chao, a former labor secretary under President Donald Trump.

In his statement, McConnell claimed, “My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke.” He added that he was briefly unconscious and hospitalized but had also been dealing with a mild case of pneumonia.

Despite this update, Ocasio-Cortez remained unconvinced. She expressed doubts about the legality of his extended absence and labeled the situation as highly abnormal.

Speaking to CBS News, she stated: “If Senator McConnell is not capable of as basic a task as answering a letter to Governor Beshear, I think that conveys a very disturbing inability to fulfill his duties.”

Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged the right to medical privacy but stressed that public officials cannot simply vanish from their responsibilities without explanation. “I don’t think any American has ever experienced the ability to just leave your job for over a month with no explanation to your employer,” she concluded.

The senator's office has yet to respond to requests for comment.
