Britney Spears Enters Treatment Center Following DUI Incident

Apr 13 2026

Britney Spears has taken a significant step by entering a treatment facility after her DUI arrest last month.

A representative for the singer confirmed on Sunday, April 12, that the 44-year-old pop star voluntarily sought help. This decision comes in the wake of her arrest on March 4 in Ventura, California, where she was suspected of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Released the following day, Spears faced scrutiny as her representative described the incident as "completely inexcusable." The statement emphasized her commitment to comply with legal requirements and expressed hope that this would mark the beginning of necessary changes in her life.

"Britney is going to take the right steps," the statement read, "and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Her boys are going to be spending time with her, and her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well-being."

Spears shares two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, with ex-husband Kevin Federline. The recent arrest adds to a series of challenges for Spears, whose erratic social media activity has raised concerns among fans since her conservatorship ended in 2021.

In his memoir, Federline expressed urgent concern for Spears, stating it was "time to sound the alarm" regarding her behavior. He wrote, “It’s become impossible to pretend everything’s OK. From where I sit, the clock is ticking, and we’re getting close to the 11th hour.” His fears center around the potential impact on their sons if changes do not occur.

A representative for Spears responded to Federline's claims, asserting that her children's well-being is her primary concern amidst the sensationalism surrounding her life.

Spears has a history of mental health struggles, having been placed under psychiatric holds in January 2008 after a series of incidents that raised alarms about her safety. One notable event involved locking herself in a bathroom with her then-infant son Jayden, which contributed to Federline gaining sole custody.

In her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, Spears reflected on that night, expressing her desperation to keep her children close. She also detailed her experiences under conservatorship, which was terminated by a judge in 2021. "This is what’s hard to explain," she wrote, "how quickly I could vacillate between being a little girl and being a teenager and being a woman because of the way they had robbed me of my freedom."

Spears has been open about her health journey, mentioning in late 2021 that she was on the "right medication" but still required significant healing. In August 2022, she shared a candid 22-minute video reflecting on the trauma of being forced into work and mental health facilities under her father's control, while also accusing her family of enabling the conservatorship's restrictive nature—a claim they have denied.

"I was scared, broken," she stated in the now-deleted video. "I'm sharing this because I want people to know I'm only human. I do feel victimized after these experiences and how can I mend this if I don't talk about it?"
