Coffee Chain Reinstates Pride Flags After Nationwide Outcry
Philz Coffee, a popular coffeehouse chain based in California, has decided to keep its LGBTQ+ Pride flags flying high after facing intense national criticism for its initial plan to remove them from all locations.
In a statement released on Friday, CEO Mahesh Sadarangani expressed regret for the “confusion and hurt” caused by the company’s earlier decision. “The Pride flag is a symbol of safety and belonging for people who don’t always find that in the world, and that is not something I want to take away from anyone who walks into a Philz,” he stated.
Prior to this announcement, Sadarangani met with leaders from San Francisco Pride, including transgender women Suzanne Ford and Jupiter Peraza. “I want to be clear about where Philz stands: our Pride flags are staying up. If a Pride flag came down, it can be put back up,” he affirmed.

Kelley Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign, hailed the decision as a significant victory for Philz’s customers and employees alike. “Philz Coffee tried to take down our flags and tamp down our pride—but we served a hot cup of reality,” Robinson remarked. “Our community spends over $1.4 trillion each year as consumers, and we’ll be watching who stands with us today, tomorrow, and always.”
With over 70 locations across California and Illinois, Philz Coffee is headquartered in San Francisco, a city synonymous with LGBTQ+ rights activism. Earlier this month, the company shocked its patrons by announcing plans to eliminate all Pride flags in an effort to create “a more consistent, inclusive experience.”
At that time, Sadarangani had stated, “This is a change in how our stores look, not in who we are. Our allyship runs deeper than what is on our walls. It shows up in who we hire, how we treat one another and in our annual Pride Month Unity celebration, which returns this June as it has every year. Unity is fundamental to how we operate.”

Despite his assurances of ongoing support for the LGBTQ+ community, many employees remained skeptical. An online petition initiated by a group calling itself Philz Coffee Baristas urged the company to “reconsider their decision and reinstate” the flags, garnering over 7,300 signatures as of Friday.
Philz Coffee has previously made headlines due to politically charged disputes between staff and management. In 2020, a store manager in San Francisco was reportedly fired after voicing opposition to the company’s policy of offering discounts to police officers. More recently, five employees were dismissed for wearing pins supporting Palestine—a contentious issue given that company founders Phil and Jacob Jaber are Palestinian but have distanced themselves from daily operations since Sadarangani took over as CEO in 2021.
