Colbert Slams Trump’s ‘Bizarre’ Melania Remark at White House

May 23 2026

“I better get rid of her!” President Donald Trump’s bizarre quip about Melania during a White House event left jaws on the floor. Stephen Colbert wasted no time in calling out the commander-in-chief for his awkward remark.

At the annual Congressional Picnic on May 19, Trump praised his wife’s recent successes, then abruptly suggested that her rising star power might threaten his own. “She did a movie, it became number one. She then went to streaming, it became number one,” he said, before adding, “there’s only room for one star in a family.”

Colbert, the late-night king of savage commentary, didn’t find the humor in Trump’s words. “It was a pretty weird thing to say to your wife,” he quipped on The Late Show, holding up a mock greeting card that read, “Roses are red. I love a Gardinia. Time for you to go back to Slovenia.”

While Melania chuckled through her husband’s speech, Colbert was busy dissecting the absurdity of it all. Trump also labeled Melania as “amazing” and acknowledged the success of her documentary, “Melania,” which hit screens worldwide on January 30.

But the film's journey wasn’t without controversy. Directed by Brett Ratner—who has faced serious allegations of sexual misconduct—the documentary was met with skepticism from critics and even some crew members who wished for its failure. A box-office expert raised eyebrows over suspicious ticket-buying patterns leading up to its release.

Despite the backlash and poor pre-launch ratings, “Melania” achieved the largest opening weekend for a non-musical documentary in over a decade. Yet, questions lingered about the financial ties between Amazon and the Trump administration, with Jeff Bezos facing accusations of using the film as a means to curry favor with the White House.

Bezos denied these claims, stating that suggestions of “buying influence” were “just not correct,” but he acknowledged the public’s skepticism. Meanwhile, Melania remained unfazed by the criticism, asserting, “I think the people will judge it for themselves.”

As Colbert wrapped up his segment, Robert De Niro couldn’t resist throwing in a brutal jab at Trump, leaving viewers buzzing with laughter and disbelief.
