Critics Blast Trump's Late Night Move to Rename Key Federal Agency

Apr 27 2026

Late Sunday night, President Donald Trump stirred controversy with a tweet suggesting a name change for a prominent federal agency, seemingly aimed at provoking media reactions.

Just a day after surviving an assassination attempt, Trump amplified a supporter’s call to rebrand U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement as National Immigration & Customs Enforcement. The proposed shift would alter the acronym from ICE to NICE, prompting the supporter to quip that it would force the media to refer to “NICE agents” continuously.

“GREAT IDEA!!!” Trump responded enthusiastically. “DO IT.”

This idea has circulated among Trump’s base as memes, particularly in light of ongoing criticism regarding ICE's aggressive enforcement tactics. Such actions have sparked widespread protests against the agency and its methods.

Earlier this year, protests in Minneapolis escalated tragically when federal agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, raising further scrutiny of ICE's operations.

Critics argue that a mere name change will not alter the agency's controversial reputation or the public's perception of its actions. Many believe that regardless of the title, the agency will still be referred to as ICE by most people.

As discussions around immigration policy continue to heat up, the implications of such a name change remain uncertain, but the backlash from various groups is already palpable.

In a political climate rife with division, Trump's latest move has only added fuel to the fire, igniting debates about the role and image of federal agencies in America.
