Europe Slams Trump’s Decision to Relax Putin Oil Sanctions Amid Ongoing Ukraine Assault
European leaders reacted swiftly to Donald Trump’s recent decision to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian oil, coinciding with a surge in attacks on Ukraine by Vladimir Putin's forces. The move has drawn sharp criticism as the conflict escalates.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that overnight, Russia unleashed a barrage of 430 drones and nearly 70 missiles, primarily targeting Kyiv's energy infrastructure. The strikes resulted in significant damage to civilian buildings, claiming at least four lives.
In response to the escalating situation, Poland briefly scrambled its jets, highlighting the heightened tensions in the region. Earlier, Trump announced a 30-day waiver on war-related sanctions, allowing countries to purchase Russian oil and petroleum products.
Zelensky warned that this decision could potentially funnel up to $10 billion into Putin's military efforts. European Council President Antonio Costa labeled the move as "very concerning," while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized it as a "wrong" choice.
Amidst these developments, Zelensky expressed frustration over the diminishing global focus on the Ukraine conflict, particularly with rising tensions in the Middle East. He acknowledged that while it is “understandable” for attention to shift, it poses challenges for Ukraine.
In a separate legal matter, a Moscow court convicted 19 individuals linked to a devastating concert hall attack in 2024 that resulted in 149 deaths and over 600 injuries. The attack, claimed by an Islamic State faction, involved gunmen opening fire before igniting a fire within the venue.
All defendants received lengthy prison sentences; fifteen were handed life terms, while others received sentences ranging from 19 years to 22 and a half years. This incident underscores the ongoing violence affecting both Russia and Ukraine.
Zelensky cautioned that Russia might exploit the Middle Eastern conflict to intensify its assaults on Ukraine. He urged for expedited implementation of agreements aimed at enhancing air defense capabilities.
“Russia will try to exploit the war in the Middle East to cause even greater destruction here in Europe, in Ukraine,” he stated emphatically. He called for Europe to accelerate missile production, particularly systems designed to intercept ballistic threats.
Ukrainian emergency services are currently engaged in operations across multiple regions, including Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Mykolaiv, responding to the extensive damage caused by Russian attacks.
“The main target for the Russians was the energy infrastructure of the Kyiv region,” Zelensky noted, adding that residential buildings and schools also suffered direct hits. “As of now, four people have been reported killed. My condolences to their families and loved ones.”
In a related development, Trump stated during an interview that the U.S. does not require assistance with drone defense when questioned about Ukraine's role in providing such support. His comments came as a team of Ukrainian experts traveled to Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia to share their experiences combating drone warfare.
Trump acknowledged that Putin might be aiding Iran in its military endeavors against the U.S., a departure from previous assertions made by his envoy. “I think he might be helping them a little bit,” Trump remarked during his interview.
Zelensky also indicated that three-sided peace talks involving Russia and the U.S. are stalling due to American negotiators being unable to leave the country amid the Middle Eastern crisis. He described the situation as akin to a soap opera.
The Ukrainian delegation expressed readiness for discussions in various locations, including Miami or Washington, but Russia proposed Turkey or Switzerland—options rejected by the U.S.
“We immediately said that we were ready for a meeting next week,” Zelensky stated. The outcome of future negotiations hinges on U.S. willingness to engage, with Washington's team led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Meanwhile, drone strikes have also targeted Russian facilities, including the Afipsky oil refinery in Krasnodar Krai, igniting significant fires and causing damage. Local reports indicate that air defense systems were activated amid multiple explosions.
Authorities confirmed damage to key processing units at the refinery, which has been previously targeted in drone attacks. Additionally, another drone strike occurred at Port Kavkaz, injuring three individuals and damaging a technical vessel.
Residents reported further drone activity in Tolyatti targeting a chemical plant; however, details regarding damage remain unclear. The ongoing conflict continues to escalate on both sides of the border as tensions rise.
