Ex-Drummer of Bruce Springsteen Claims Misrepresentation in NY Post Article

Apr 14 2026

Vini Lopez, the former drummer for Bruce Springsteen, is pushing back against a recent article from the New York Post that suggested he believes his old bandmate should show respect for President Donald Trump.

The piece, published on Sunday, bore the headline, “Ex-Longtime Springsteen Drummer Vini Lopez Says Woke Boss Should Respect Trump,” which sparked immediate controversy.

While Springsteen has been vocal about his disdain for Trump during his current tour, the article implies that Lopez holds a contrasting view. He is quoted stating, “You gotta have respect for the president,” and “Trump is the president of the United States — everyone should have respect for him.”

Lopez elaborated that if he were to meet Trump, he would “have mucho respect for the man,” but humorously noted he “wouldn’t talk to him about anything that’s going on” politically.

He recounted a past encounter with Trump at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, describing the future president as “very nice and inquisitive.” Lopez claimed Trump even told him to relay a message to Springsteen: “I’m his biggest fan.”

However, on Monday, Lopez took to social media to express his discontent with the article, asserting he was both misquoted and misrepresented. “If you read that NY Post thing I want you to know that first of all that headline is a pure lie. I never said that,” he posted on Facebook.

Lopez emphasized he would never label Springsteen as “woke” and clarified that he expressed support for Springsteen during his conversation with the reporter. He stated he respects “the office of the Presidency [sic]. NOT TRUMP..!!”

“That article sucks.!” he added. “I’ll never trust anyone again when talking to them.!”

The author of the Post article has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding Lopez’s reaction.

Despite Lopez's comments, the tension between Springsteen and Trump remains evident. Since January, Springsteen has been vocal against Trump, releasing songs like “Streets of Minneapolis” in response to controversial immigration policies that led to tragic outcomes.

In retaliation, Trump recently criticized Springsteen on his Truth Social platform, labeling him a “bad” and “very boring singer,” and making disparaging remarks about his appearance.
