Ex-Stoke City Star Graham Shaw Scores Big in Local Politics

Graham Shaw, once a name on the pitch, is now making headlines in the political arena after clinching a council seat in Knutton for Reform UK.

On May 7, voters across the nation cast their ballots, and Reform UK emerged as a surprising force, snatching seats from traditional powerhouses.

Shaw, who hung up his boots after a career that included stints at Preston North End and Rochdale, is now set to represent the Knutton ward on the Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council.

Having spent over four decades entrenched in the local community, Shaw claims to have witnessed the decline of Newcastle firsthand. His mission? To revive local pride, bolster businesses, and tackle crime head-on.

In an interview, Shaw expressed that voters were eager to “give him a chance,” fueled by their discontent with the current national political landscape.

As the election results trickle in, Reform UK has already secured 267 seats, primarily at the expense of Labour and Tory candidates, who have lost 191 and 103 seats respectively.

Despite this surge, polling expert Sir John Curtice cautioned that Reform UK likely hasn’t crossed the 30% threshold of total votes, highlighting the ongoing fragmentation within British politics.

Sir John remarked, “Labour may not face the catastrophic losses of 1,500 seats that some predicted could threaten Keir Starmer’s leadership.”

He elaborated, “The overarching narrative is that Reform is leading the charge in declared elections, mirroring their performance from last year.”

However, he noted that other parties are trailing closely behind, all hovering around the 15-20% mark, making it challenging to discern clear winners.

“Let’s be clear: none of these parties are dominating. Even Reform is likely shy of 30%,” he added. “These results underscore the fracturing of British politics.”

Interestingly, the Greens are struggling to convert their votes into tangible seats, often landing in “far too many creditable second and third places,” according to Sir John.

As Graham Shaw steps into his new role, it remains to be seen how his experience on the field translates into political prowess. Will he be able to tackle the issues plaguing his community or will he find himself sidelined in a game of political chess?
