Flávio Bolsonaro's High-Stakes Escape: From Brazil to Miami in a Stealthy Flight

Oct 30 2026

Flávio Bolsonaro, the defeated Brazilian presidential candidate, executed a stealthy escape from Brazil, landing in Miami after a convoluted route through Argentina and Ecuador. This maneuver comes as he faces serious allegations of corruption and money laundering.

On Tuesday, Bolsonaro departed Brazil with his wife and two daughters, crossing into Argentina before heading to Ecuador. Flight data confirms this route, revealing the family's rapid transit through these countries.

The senator, aged 45, arrived in Florida just one day after the Trump administration granted him and his family U.S. visas, a move that raises eyebrows given the political climate.

Bolsonaro lost the recent runoff election to incumbent president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and is now under investigation by Brazil’s Supreme Court for multiple offenses. A Brazilian judge had ordered him to surrender both his regular and diplomatic passports by noon on Tuesday.

He has consistently denied any wrongdoing, labeling the investigation as political persecution aimed at silencing him.

According to Argentina's National Directorate of Migration, Bolsonaro and his family entered Argentina via the Tancredo Neves International Bridge at 10:50 p.m. on Tuesday, armed with valid travel documents.

Within an hour of their entry, they boarded a private charter plane. Flight-tracking data indicates that this aircraft landed in Guayaquil, Ecuador, around 4 a.m. local time before continuing on to Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, arriving at approximately 9:30 a.m. local time Wednesday.

A Brazilian diplomat disclosed that Bolsonaro entered Argentina using an Italian passport. His exit from Brazil left no trace at checkpoints since exit checks are not mandatory. Reports confirm that Bolsonaro has held Italian citizenship since 2023.

The U.S. State Department confirmed it would issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family, facilitating their entry into the United States.

This escape could further complicate relations between Lula and Argentine President Javier Milei, who is aligned with Trump and previously supported Bolsonaro's campaign.

In a letter published by Metrópoles, Bolsonaro claimed he is “the true president-elect of Brazil,” alleging that Lula’s allies stole the election. He later modified this statement to refer to himself as “the true leader of Brazil.”

He expressed gratitude towards Argentine President Milei for his “courage” and thanked Trump and the American people for their support. Milei’s administration has denied any involvement in facilitating Bolsonaro's departure.

Bolsonaro accused Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin of enabling what he termed a “mathematical impossibility” that allowed Lula to gain over 10 million votes from the first round to the second. This claim has been debunked; Zanin merely extended voting hours until 7 p.m., with only about 34,000 votes cast after 5 p.m.

Lula won the election by approximately 4.3 million votes. Both candidates typically gain votes between rounds as other candidates are eliminated. Lula increased his tally from about 53.9 million votes in the first round to 64.3 million in the runoff, while Bolsonaro rose from approximately 56.1 million to 59.8 million.

Bolsonaro also targeted Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who ordered him to surrender his passports, accusing him of initiating “the regime’s machinery of political persecution” immediately following the election results.

Despite his circumstances, Bolsonaro insisted he did not flee Brazil but left for its benefit, claiming that remaining would have led to his “silencing, imprisonment and censorship.”

He asserted there is “no arrest warrant” against him, which is technically correct; however, he departed after being ordered to surrender his passports. He likened himself to historical figures such as Charles de Gaulle and vowed to lead Brazil’s opposition from abroad while strategizing against Lula’s potential consolidation of power.

Lula condemned Bolsonaro’s departure as “shameful.”

The election results showed Lula securing 51.8 percent of valid votes compared to Bolsonaro's 48.2 percent, according to Brazil's Superior Electoral Court. Lula's victory marks his fourth nonconsecutive term as president, set to begin on January 5, 2027, with formal certification required by December 18.

This outcome signifies that Brazil will not align with the rising wave of right-leaning governments supportive of Trump.

Trump expressed approval of Bolsonaro's arrival in the U.S., referring to him and his family as “fine people.”

Trump described the election as “really strange” and “terrible,” without elaborating further but emphasizing his lack of endorsement for the results.

Global leaders and the Organization of American States have recognized Lula's victory and congratulated him on his reelection by a margin of about 4.4 million votes in the final round.

Oliver Stuenkel, an international relations professor at the Getulio Vargas Foundation in São Paulo, noted that Lula’s win was unexpected given pre-election forecasts.

Stuenkel remarked that Bolsonaro’s defeat energized a smaller group capable of delivering a clear message while highlighting an overconfidence within Bolsonaro’s campaign.

The day after his electoral loss, Bolsonaro received a Supreme Court order demanding he surrender his Brazilian passports. He stated he received this order outside his father's residence, where former president Jair Bolsonaro is under house arrest for plotting a coup after losing the previous election.

Federal police were not monitoring Bolsonaro during his departure from Brasília since no arrest warrant had been issued by the Supreme Court.

In a video posted Monday, Bolsonaro claimed he was attempting to rally congressional support against the election results. His Senate term concludes on January 31, 2027.

The Supreme Court is probing whether Bolsonaro utilized a sports betting company to launder money from fraudulent deductions on government pensions for senior citizens. Additionally, he faces accusations of accepting millions from a disgraced banker.
