Gas Prices Surge to $4.23 - Highest Since Ukraine Invasion
Gas prices have surged to an average of $4.23 per gallon in the United States, marking a significant increase since the onset of the Iran conflict, as reported by AAA.
Since late February, when the war began, prices have skyrocketed by nearly 150 percent. This latest figure surpasses a previous record set just a day earlier and represents the highest cost at the pump for American consumers since April 2022, coinciding with Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The escalating oil prices are creating widespread economic repercussions. Airlines are contemplating flight reductions and fare hikes, while some gas stations are sacrificing profit margins to maintain customer loyalty by offering lower prices.
Tom Kloza, chief energy adviser to Gulf Oil, remarked, “This is the most serious squeeze, in terms of margin suppression, we’ve seen for retailers since 2020.”
Persistently high gas prices pose risks not only to the current administration but also to the Republican party's standing, with the International Monetary Fund warning of a potential recession if the conflict continues to disrupt oil trade in the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

A recent poll indicates that over half of registered voters attribute rising gas prices significantly to President Trump’s policies.
The president's approval ratings have plummeted to a second-term low, with only 34 percent of respondents in a Reuters/Ipsos poll expressing satisfaction with his performance.
In response to these challenges, assistant White House press secretary Olivia Wales stated, “The President brought oil and gas prices down to multi-year lows at record speed, and as traffic in the Strait of Hormuz normalizes, these energy prices will plummet once again.” She emphasized that these disruptions are temporary and highlighted Trump’s decisive actions regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
On Tuesday, Trump convened with oil and gas executives, including Chevron CEO Mike Wirth, at the White House to discuss the U.S.'s relative stability compared to other nations amid ongoing conflicts.
Following this meeting, Trump issued a provocative message on social media, showcasing a mock-up image of himself holding an assault rifle with the caption, “No more Mr Nice Guy!”

“Iran can’t get their act together,” he declared on Truth Social. “They don’t know how to sign a nonnuclear deal. They better get smart soon!”
Efforts to negotiate an end to the war and reopen the vital oil-shipping lane remain stalled.
Despite these challenges, reports suggest that Trump has been portraying himself in grandiose terms lately, claiming to be one of history's most powerful figures.
“He’s been talking recently about how he is the most powerful person to ever live,” a confidant shared with The Atlantic. “He wants to be remembered as the one who did things that other people couldn’t do, because of his sheer power and force of will.”
