Interior Secretary's Insane Gas Advice Sparks Outrage Among Travelers

Jun 30 2026

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum delivered a jaw-dropping piece of advice to Americans gearing up for the Fourth of July weekend, igniting a firestorm on social media.

“My last thing, on a piece of good news, I would tell people, if you’re concerned about the price of gas, of course it’s dropping again this week; President Trump, his energy policies helping lower the price of energy,” Burgum told Fox News host Trey Gowdy. “But if you’re gonna gas up, here’s a tip: gas up in a red state.”

He claimed, “On average, nationally right now this weekend it’s 53 cents cheaper per gallon to fill up your car in a red state than it is in a blue state.”

While Burgum's assertion about gas prices in Republican-majority states holds some truth, critics swiftly dismantled the practicality of his suggestion. Many pointed out that avoiding inflated gas prices is nearly impossible due to President Donald Trump’s war in Iran and the resulting closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has sent global oil prices soaring.

Others mocked the absurdity of suggesting that drivers should detour to fill their tanks in specific states just to save a few cents. The backlash was swift and relentless, highlighting the disconnect between political rhetoric and everyday realities faced by American travelers.
