JD Vance Cautions Pope on Theological Discourse

Apr 17 2026

During a Turning Point USA event on Tuesday, Vice President JD Vance issued a cautionary note to Pope Leo XIV regarding his theological statements. “The pope needs to be careful,” Vance remarked, emphasizing the weight of the pontiff's words as he embarks on a significant visit across four African nations.

Vance specifically referenced the pope's assertion that “God is never on the side of those who wield the sword,” pointing out the longstanding tradition of “Just War Theory” that has been debated for over a millennium. “We can certainly disagree on whether this or that conflict is just,” he added, highlighting the complexity of such discussions.

“It’s crucial for leaders, including the vice president, to exercise caution when discussing public policy,” Vance continued. “The same applies to the pope when he addresses theological matters.” His comments come in the wake of President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of the pope’s peace advocacy amid the Iran conflict, which included sharing an image that sparked outrage across party lines.

Vance’s relationship with MAGA supporters has evolved since his 2022 Senate campaign, particularly after a private Facebook message from 2016 resurfaced, where he labeled Trump as “America’s Hitler” and described him as “a cynical asshole.”

His conversion to Catholicism in 2019 has also led to some awkward moments, notably when the church featured on the cover of his upcoming book, “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,” turned out to be a United Methodist congregation rather than a Catholic one.

Despite facing backlash for his remarks about the pope, Trump has remained defiant, even sharing an AI-generated image depicting himself as a Christ-like figure. Meanwhile, Vance encountered heckling regarding U.S. support for Israel during the Turning Point event, and his comments about the pope have ignited fierce reactions across social media platforms.
