JD Vance Claims Charlie Kirk’s Murder Triggered Wife Usha’s Decision to Have Another Child

Jun 07 2026

JD Vance's revelation that the assassination of Charlie Kirk influenced his wife Usha to have another child is shocking. The vice president disclosed this in his memoir, detailing how the tragedy struck his family deeply.

Vance, who was a close ally of the slain conservative activist, recounted how Usha changed her mind after comforting Erika Kirk, who was devastated following her husband's fatal shooting. Erika expressed her regret over having only two children with Charlie, which struck a chord with Usha.

“For years I had asked Usha to have another baby, and for years she had told me she was done—especially now that public service had elevated us into the national spotlight,” Vance wrote in “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,” an excerpt published recently.

“But something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy,” he added.

“One life was stolen from us, but another was given,” Vance stated, reflecting on his Catholic faith amidst the turmoil.

The Vance family already includes three children: Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4. Their fourth child is expected to arrive in late July.

In his memoir, Vance credited Charlie Kirk with helping him navigate parenthood while adjusting to their newfound public life. He frequently consulted Kirk about the pressures of national politics on family dynamics.

Kirk was assassinated on a college campus in Utah in September 2025. He gained notoriety as a conservative Christian figure through viral videos where he debated opposing ideologies.

When Vance sought advice on helping his oldest son cope with constant media attention and security measures, Kirk advised him to embrace fame as a necessary sacrifice for their political cause. Vance noted that his son gradually adapted to their new reality.

Kirk emerged as one of Vance's closest friends and political confidants.

After Kirk's assassination, the Vances traveled to Utah to support Erika and assist in bringing Kirk's casket home.

Since then, Vance has taken on a role as a guest speaker for Turning Point USA, the organization co-founded by Charlie Kirk to promote conservative Christian values among youth. He has actively participated in several Turning Point events and has supported Erika Kirk, who now leads the organization.

The vice president’s memoir also explores his conversion to Catholicism in 2019 and serves as a sequel to his bestselling book, “Hillbilly Elegy.”

Vance has openly discussed how his Catholic beliefs shape his political views, asserting that his public policy positions align closely with Catholic social teaching.

He has advocated for families to have more children and has made controversial remarks about “childless cat ladies.”
