Kaepernick and Springsteen Slammed with ACLU Award Amidst Controversy and Sacrifice
Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, a polarizing figure in American sports, received an award from the American Civil Liberties Union for his contributions to American thought and culture.
Kaepernick and rock icon Bruce Springsteen were honored with the ACLU Ralph Ellison Award for Defenders of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties in the Arts, Business, Science, and Sports. This recognition comes a decade after Kaepernick's infamous kneeling during the national anthem, a protest against police violence and racial inequality.
In his acceptance speech, Kaepernick stated, “We know our civil liberties are under attack, we know humanity is under attack, education is under attack. They are trying to encroach on our rights, encroach on our dignity, encroach on the future that we want to build together.” He emphasized the importance of collective action, questioning whether society would choose to build schools or defend rights, or remain isolated.
His protest was not without consequences. Kaepernick faced backlash from politicians, team owners, and fellow players. Alongside teammate Eric Reid, he filed collusion grievances against the NFL in 2017, claiming they were blacklisted for their activism. They reached a settlement in 2019.
Deborah Archer, president of the ACLU, remarked on Kaepernick's sacrifices: “He demonstrated in real time the price America too often exacts from those who challenge racial injustice. His peaceful protest was met with extraordinary personal sacrifice. He lost the career he spent his life building.”
Springsteen closed the event with a solo performance of “Streets of Minneapolis,” further highlighting the evening's focus on activism. The awards ceremony was hosted by actress Laverne Cox.
Archer noted the significance of recognizing those fighting for civil rights: “It’s important for us to recognize all of the people who are contributing to the fight to protect civil rights and civil liberties. Those folks — actors, athletes — these folks have all shown up in incredibly powerful ways.”
The ACLU continues to spotlight individuals who challenge systemic injustices through their platforms.
