MAGA Voters Turn on Trump: Gas Prices Soar, Harris Seen as Better Option
Trump's war in Iran has sent gas prices skyrocketing, and now even his staunchest supporters are pointing fingers. A significant number of MAGA voters believe Kamala Harris could have managed the situation better, according to a recent poll.
This week, the average price for a gallon of gas surged back to $4, driven by Trump's aggressive military actions in Iran and retaliatory strikes that have disrupted global fuel supplies. As Trump's interim deal with Tehran collapses, frustration mounts within his own base over the economic fallout.
In May, half of Trump's MAGA supporters believed the costs of the Iran war were justified; that number has plummeted to just over a third now, as revealed by a new POLITICO Poll.

When asked about the reasons behind rising gas prices since Trump took office, a majority of respondents pointed to the Iran conflict. This includes 57 percent of MAGA voters and 63 percent of non-MAGA Trump supporters.
Alarmingly, 20 percent of Trump's backers think gas prices have risen more under his administration than they would have under Harris had she won the 2024 election. Only 34 percent of Trump voters believe prices would have increased more under a Democrat, while 35 percent think they would have remained the same.
Trump recently attended the dignified transfer ceremony for four U.S. service members killed in his Iran war, further highlighting the human cost of his military decisions.

“This shows that as unpopular as the first round of war was from February to early summer, this second round is even more ridiculous,” said Curt Mills, executive director of the American Conservative magazine.
“The American people quite simply do not get it, do not understand why we are in this war, and, yes, President Trump is king of the Republican Party. Yes, the president can do a lot and has a lot of latitude with his own supporters, but kings are not invulnerable from political reality,” he added.
The discontent among MAGA voters coincides with House Republicans pushing through a $95 billion package to fund the Iran war and other Trump priorities.

House Republicans showed division over the funding plan, with conservatives expressing concern due to the lack of offsetting budget cuts. Nonetheless, Speaker Mike Johnson moved forward with the vote tally at 216-214, with two Republicans and one independent siding with Democrats against it.
“Just bullets and bombs to finish the job,” stated Rep. Jodey Arrington, R-Texas, chairman of the Budget Committee. Democrats countered that funds should be allocated domestically to alleviate costs for Americans.
“Republicans plan to spend tens of billions of dollars on Trump’s failed war in Iran,” said Rep. Pete Aguilar of California, chairman of the House Democratic caucus. “Think about what we could spend with these resources instead.”
