Mamdani's Political Power Play: Progressive Candidates Crush Establishment in Primaries
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani flexed his political muscle as his endorsed candidates obliterated their competition in the primaries, showcasing a seismic shift in power dynamics.
Primary night in New York served as a litmus test for Mamdani's political ambitions, and the results were nothing short of a triumph.
All three candidates he backed for Congress emerged victorious, delivering a crushing defeat to establishment Democrats and signaling a robust leftward shift.

Mamdani broke ranks with Democratic leaders, endorsing leftist candidates unafraid to challenge Israel and advocate for bold economic reforms.
The most shocking upset unfolded in New York's 13th district, where Mamdani's choice, Darializa Avila Chevalier, a community organizer and democratic socialist, narrowly defeated five-term incumbent Adriano Espaillat, who is 71 years old. This victory was confirmed by a race call from The Associated Press.
Espaillat, the first Dominican-American elected to Congress and chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, boasted endorsements from influential Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Establishment Democrats faced further humiliation in New York's 10th congressional district, where progressive challenger Brad Lander decisively ousted two-term Rep. Dan Goldman, also backed by Jeffries.
In the open race to replace retiring progressive Rep. Nydia Velázquez in New York's 7th district, Mamdani endorsed state Rep. Claire Valdez, a democratic socialist, over Antonio Reynoso, who had the support of Velázquez and the Working Families Party.
These districts are heavily Democratic strongholds, positioning Valdez, Lander, and Avila Chevalier as frontrunners for their general election battles in the fall.
