Mayor Mamdani's Arrest Threat Against Netanyahu Sparks Outrage: 'Delusional' and 'Reckless'

Jul 20 2026

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under fire for his outrageous vow to attempt the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he arrives in New York City for the UN General Assembly. Critics are furious, insisting that the mayor should prioritize the city's pressing issues instead of meddling in international affairs.

GOP firebrand and Brooklyn City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov slammed Mamdani, stating, “Mamdani should concern himself with the homeless epidemic, the affordability crisis and the floods on New York City’s roads rather than illegally meddling in foreign affairs to befriend more terrorists and attempt to arrest our friends.”

Vernikov further ridiculed Mamdani’s stance, asserting, “He’s the mayor of New York City, not the secretary general of the United Nations.” She fired off a blistering letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, demanding that Mamdani’s “threat of an illegal order of arrest must bear consequences.”

In her letter, she expressed concern over Mamdani’s disregard for U.S. jurisdiction, stating, “The Mayor of New York City does not recognize the jurisdiction of the United States of America and will do anything he can to subvert our Constitutional Republic.”

Vernikov called for a stern warning from the State Department regarding whether Mamdani’s actions could lead to prosecution or criminal action against him.

Brooklyn state Assemblyman Kalman Yeger labeled Mamdani as “delusional,” echoing the sentiments of many who believe the mayor is out of touch with reality.

Mamdani himself declared to the New York Times that he believes Netanyahu “belongs in The Hague,” referencing the International Court of Justice. He claimed to be engaged in an “active conversation” about pursuing legal action against the Prime Minister during his visit to Manhattan.

Democratic Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman joined the chorus of critics, branding Mamdani a “clown” and dismissing his threats as empty bravado. “It’s such a tough guy to say that kind of thing. He has no way to do that,” Fetterman stated on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”

Former Mayor Eric Adams also criticized his successor, stating, “This isn’t a college protest. Threatening to arrest the democratically elected leader of one of America’s closest allies during U.N. General Assembly week isn’t bold. It’s reckless.”

Shosh Bedrosian, a former New Yorker and Israel’s most recent representative for the prime minister’s office, defended Netanyahu, asserting that he deserves respect as the elected leader of a democratic ally. She pointed out that Mamdani seems unfazed by the Iranian regime's operations in New York City, despite being a designated state sponsor of terrorism.

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO and national director of the Anti-Defamation League, condemned Mamdani’s rhetoric as mere political posturing. He stated, “Discussing ways to single out and arrest the prime minister of the Jewish state in New York City is nothing but political posturing — and it’s pathetic. New Yorkers should recognize this for what it is: a waste of precious government resources.”

Greenblatt urged Mamdani to redirect his focus towards serving and protecting all New Yorkers instead of fixating on his “seething obsession with the only Jewish state in the world.”
