Mother Charged After Daughter Found Dead Next to 173 Vodka Bottles
Gretchen Leanne Ryan, 55, stands accused of enabling her teenage daughter’s death, with prosecutors detailing a harrowing account of systematic abuse and medical neglect. The 16-year-old, Grace Ryan, died in March, and the police arrest affidavit spans 25 pages of chilling allegations.
Investigators uncovered extensive digital evidence, including text messages and device records, that paint a grim picture of isolation and alcohol supply. Grace was pulled from public high school in April 2025 and shifted to online learning, where she reportedly completed only one semester of ninth grade by March 2026.

For months, Grace remained confined to the house, devoid of outside activities. By September 2025, both mother and daughter were allegedly consuming alcohol and marijuana together, with daily discussions about obtaining more alcohol.
Messages reveal that Ryan frequently arranged for alcohol deliveries and attempted to conceal her daughter's drinking from the girl's father, who lived mostly in the basement. The district attorney's office noted that documented communications indicated Grace suffered severe health issues due to the alcohol provided by her mother.

Grace's texts leading up to her death are haunting. Just five days before she passed away, she reached out to her mother in desperation: “I’m in so much pain I can’t keep doing this. Do something.” She demanded medical help, questioning why her mother encouraged her to drink more.
Despite these alarming messages, investigators allege that Ryan failed to seek medical assistance. The final message from Grace was sent at 10:07 PM on March 8 from an iPad.

When authorities arrived, they found Grace dead on the bathroom floor next to her iPad. In her bedroom, a staggering 173 empty bottles of hard liquor and vodka were discovered hidden under the bed and in the wardrobe. A preliminary post-mortem examination revealed an abnormally fatty liver, a condition highly unusual for someone of her age, consistent with chronic alcohol use.
The cause of death was ruled as aspiration pneumonia due to long-term alcohol consumption, which prosecutors claim suppressed her natural gag reflex. In police interviews, Gretchen Ryan reportedly expressed guilt over her daughter's death, stating, “I feel like I killed her.”

Ryan described herself as an alcoholic and echoed this sentiment multiple times before and after Grace's death. The affidavit alleges that she continued to ensure a steady supply of alcohol at home while helping her daughter hide their drinking from Grace’s father.
In a series of unanswered texts sent in January, Ryan admitted to committing child abuse and murder, acknowledging the severity of their situation. “So we have to do something it is really bad. Do you understand?” she wrote.

Ryan’s messages included alarming admissions about Grace’s health: “Vomiting blood is a really bad sign. Look it up.” Despite these warnings, she did not take action to get help for her daughter.
Prosecutors have charged Gretchen Ryan with second-degree murder, alleging she fueled her daughter's addiction and neglected to seek medical care. She is currently held in Jefferson County on a $500,000 cash-only bond, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 17.
