“The President of the United States is exploiting tragedy instead of uniting us,” California Governor Gavin Newsom declared, taking aim at Trump following the latest assassination attempt on the former president's life.
In a fiery response, Newsom accused Trump of turning a dire situation into a platform for his own agenda. “He used this moment not just to exploit the assassination attempt but to further suppress free speech and attack Comey over a beach photo,” Newsom stated, clearly frustrated with the president's tactics.

The backdrop? A bizarre accusation from the Trump camp against ex-FBI chief James Comey, who allegedly threatened Trump’s life by posting an innocuous image of seashells arranged in an '8647' formation. The Trump administration claimed '86' was code for eliminating something, while '47' referred to Trump as the 47th president. Talk about a stretch!
Newsom didn’t stop there. He also slammed Trump for suggesting a suspension of elections, framing it as a direct assault on democracy itself. “Donald Trump is OPENLY calling to suspend elections so MAGA can rig them. That’s how democracy ends,” he blasted on social media, employing a satirical, all-caps style that’s become his signature.
Meanwhile, Trump took to Truth Social, insisting that elections must not be conducted unconstitutionally for the “convenience” of state legislatures. “If they have to vote twice, so be it,” he proclaimed, pushing for states to cancel current election processes to implement new maps based on a recent Supreme Court ruling.

His comments come amid a legal and political firestorm over congressional redistricting ahead of the 2026 midterms. “We should demand that State Legislatures do what the Supreme Court says must be done,” Trump insisted, claiming that these changes would net Republicans over 20 House seats in the upcoming elections.
In a move that aligns with Trump's rhetoric, Louisiana’s governor has already suspended the state’s upcoming primary elections to allow for map redrawing—a decision that Trump has publicly endorsed. The stakes are high, and the political chess game is heating up.
As tensions rise and accusations fly, one thing is clear: the battle for control over the narrative—and the future of American democracy—has only just begun.
