The former One Direction member found himself in hot water when fans in Argentina claimed he liked a meme that ridiculed the nation's football team during the World Cup.
This post, titled '8 times Argentina were really nice guys during the World Cup final,' took aim at several controversial actions by Argentine players, including Lionel Messi's interactions with referees and Nahuel Molina's aggressive play.
However, it was the final slide that ignited fury among his followers.
The image proclaimed 'Las Malvinas son Españolas,' a provocative twist on the phrase 'Las Malvinas son Argentinas,' which translates to 'The Malvinas are Spanish.' This statement touches on the fraught history between the UK and Argentina over the Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas.
Fans expressed outrage, claiming the image trivialized a matter of national significance. Many felt that by liking the post, Horan had delivered an insult to their country.
One fan account went so far as to assert that the singer "hates Argentinians," while another lamented his betrayal of supporters in Argentina.
A lengthy statement from a follower emphasized that the post transcended mere football banter, stating: "Things stopped being harmless football banter the moment people started making up claims that we’re racist."
