Senegal's World Cup Squad on the Brink of Collapse Over Unpaid Bonuses and Contract Chaos

Jun 21 2026

Senegal's World Cup team is teetering on the edge of chaos, grappling with unpaid bonuses and a head coach who hasn't seen a paycheck in five months.

The squad faces turmoil as they prepare to make their mark in North America, with reports of outstanding financial obligations and a coach operating without a contract. Pape Thiaw, the head coach, is in a precarious position, managing the team while lacking both payment and formal employment status.

Senegal stands among Africa's top soccer nations, alongside world No. 7 Morocco. They previously triumphed over Morocco in the African Cup of Nations final, only to have that victory marred by a ten-minute walk-off from the field.

Last year, Senegal showcased their strength with a commanding 3-0 victory against England, but their World Cup journey began with a disappointing 3-1 loss to France, the tournament favorites. Despite this setback, they still have a shot at advancing to the knockout rounds with wins in their remaining group-stage matches.

Reports indicate that the Senegalese Football Federation is downplaying the seriousness of the situation regarding player bonuses, which remain unpaid despite prior commitments to the international players.

Financial strains are evident as the federation has already received substantial prize money from AFCON 2025 and bonuses for World Cup qualification, yet players are left waiting for their due compensation.

Budget cuts have severely impacted their World Cup preparations. The accommodations selected for the team in the U.S. reportedly fall short of what is necessary for a successful tournament, leading to dissatisfaction among players.

Thiaw's situation is dire; he has been coaching without pay for months and lacks a contract since earlier this year. The federation's decision on his future may hinge on how well Senegal performs in North America.

Despite the turmoil, the federation denied claims that Thiaw refused to travel to the U.S. due to his circumstances. On the field, Senegal showed competitiveness against France until a late surge from the 2018 world champions sealed their fate.

Thiaw expressed a desire for more fans to support the team during the tournament but acknowledged the strong Senegalese community already present in North America. "Of course we would like to have our fans, we know what they can do for us," he stated. "But we have a major Senegalese community (in the U.S.), and we know the Senegalese are very patriotic ... you will see this tomorrow. You won’t even believe it that no Senegalese came over from Senegal."
