Silence from ‘MeToo’ Democrats as Graham Platner’s Scandal Erupts — Schumer in Damage Control

Democratic leaders, who have built their careers on championing abuse victims, are shockingly mute on Graham Platner's scandal, a lefty Senate candidate from Maine accused of serious misconduct. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is in full-blown damage control mode, desperate to prevent the party from losing its chance to seize the Senate this fall.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a self-identified survivor of sexual assault, has nothing to say about the married Platner's alleged physical abuse of girlfriends, his sexting escapades, or his disturbing fantasies about raping intruders. When pressed, she offered a weak excuse: “I have to read up on this latest reporting. I don’t want to speak until I’ve dug into what’s out there.”

Senator Elizabeth Warren brushed off inquiries about whether party leaders should intervene in the mess surrounding Platner, who faces accusations of locking a former girlfriend in a bedroom and physical abuse. “Referee what? That’s up to the people of Maine,” she stated after attending a meeting where Platner was grilled about potential further revelations.

Senator Mazie Hirono previously told men to “just shut up and step up” during the Kavanaugh hearings but now remains silent on Platner, who is challenging Republican incumbent Susan Collins. “It’s mainly a voter thing that the people of Maine are going to have to decide how they think about these factors,” she said.

Senator Tammy Baldwin echoed this sentiment, stating, “I’m leaving Maine up to Mainers — I’m not weighing in.” She has been vocal about sexual assault issues within the US Coast Guard but is now avoiding the Platner scandal.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen remarked, “I think inappropriate sexual behavior is wrong, no matter who does it, but it’s up to the voters to decide.”

Political consultant Hank Sheinkopf criticized lawmakers for their silence, claiming the “political industrial complex controls the argument — conscience doesn’t matter anymore.” He labeled AOC as “the greatest player of hopscotch in American politics” after her office failed to comment on the allegations against Platner.

Schumer had initially recruited 78-year-old Maine Governor Janet Mills for the Senate seat, a move that faced backlash as the party seeks fresh faces to attract Trump voters. She has since suspended her campaign but remains on the ballot for the upcoming primary.

Platner and Collins are tied in a recent GOP poll. Sheinkopf warned that Platner could jeopardize the Democrats' chances of regaining majority control, stating, “[Platner] could be in national ads.”

The situation has ignited fury among some Democrats. One top Senate aide expressed frustration: “Platner can’t take a heat lamp, let alone a real spotlight. To Democratic strategists at the top this is, ‘I told you so’ and get ready for more.”

Democrats now face the prospect of spending millions to “resuscitate” Platner, with left-wing lawmakers who supported him remaining silent, fearing they may have shot themselves in the foot.

“Platner has got everything to gain by going forward and nothing to gain by getting out,” one Democratic senator noted. “I don’t know what they can do... Either they convince him if the s—t is serious beyond what we see, to get out. Or they go along.”

Platner has denied all allegations of abuse, labeling them as “politically motivated.”

Senator Raphael Warnock is one of the few Democrats to address the allegations directly: “These allegations are deeply concerning. And I think the people of Maine deserve answers. And this kind of abuse is something to be taken very, very seriously.”
