Suspect in Media Dinner Shooting Identified as Self-Proclaimed "Friendly Federal Assassin" Targeting Administration Officials
Minutes before the gunfire erupted at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, a California man, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, sent alarming messages to his family, branding himself a “Friendly Federal Assassin.” These writings, which have drawn the attention of investigators, criticized policies of the Trump administration and hinted at a politically motivated assault, as revealed by a law enforcement source familiar with the case.
In these messages, Allen made veiled references to President Donald Trump, expressing discontent over various administration actions, including military operations against drug trafficking vessels in the eastern Pacific. The timing of these communications, just prior to the shooting at the Washington Hilton, has led authorities to consider them as significant indicators of his mindset and potential motives.
Investigators are piecing together a profile of Allen through his writings, social media activity, and interviews with family members. They have discovered a series of anti-Trump posts linked to him, further illuminating his political stance. Allen, 31, allegedly attempted to breach security at the event while armed with multiple weapons.
Following the receipt of his writings, Allen’s brother reached out to police in New London, Connecticut. This prompted local authorities to alert federal law enforcement about the situation. Meanwhile, federal agents have also spoken with Allen’s sister in Maryland. She disclosed that her brother had legally acquired several firearms from a California gun store and had stored them at their parents’ home in Torrance without their knowledge.

Describing her brother as someone who often made radical statements, she provided insight into his behavior. According to law enforcement officials, Allen purchased a .38-caliber semiautomatic pistol in October 2023 and a 12-gauge shotgun two years later.
Authorities are currently investigating the specifics of Allen’s intended targets. They are assessing whether his grievances were directed specifically at Trump and Vice President JD Vance or if they reflected a broader animosity toward the administration as a whole. The officials involved in this ongoing investigation spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the case.
