Team USA Curler Takes a Stand Against Trump and ICE Amid Immigration Controversy
Rich Ruohonen, a member of Team USA's curling squad, openly criticized immigration enforcement actions in Minnesota during a press conference on Tuesday. The state, known for its strong curling community, has been the backdrop for recent protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities.
As the Winter Olympics unfold, American athletes have increasingly voiced their opinions on domestic issues. Notably, skier Hunter Hess faced backlash from President Trump, who labeled him a "real loser" over the weekend.
“I’m honored to represent Team USA and our country,” Ruohonen stated. “However, we cannot ignore the troubling events occurring in Minnesota.” The 54-year-old personal injury lawyer emphasized the local impact of these immigration sweeps.
“It’s been a challenging time for everyone. This is happening right in our backyard,” he remarked, highlighting the emotional toll on the community.
Protests erupted across Minnesota following the deaths of two U.S. citizens during ICE operations, part of Trump’s broader crackdown on illegal immigration. Ruohonen, reflecting on his legal background, asserted, “We have a constitution that guarantees our freedom of speech and protects us from unreasonable searches and seizures. What’s happening in Minnesota is unequivocally wrong.”

With Minnesota being a prominent hub for curling, it has produced several Olympic athletes, including John Shuster, who led the men’s team to gold at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. Ruohonen, serving as an alternate for the men’s team, expressed pride in the solidarity shown by his fellow Minnesotans.
“I admire the outpouring of love and compassion from people coming together to support those in need,” he said. “Minnesota embodies these values, and we cherish our country. We play for each other, our families, and friends who have sacrificed so much to be here.”
He further connected the spirit of the Olympics to the values demonstrated by his community. “The essence of the Olympics is about excellence, respect, and friendship. We all embody these principles. We represent not just Minnesota but also those across the nation who share compassion and respect for one another.”
