Thora Birch Unleashes Her Truth: Bisexuality and Boldness at The Abbey

May 22 2026

Thora Birch just dropped a bombshell at The Abbey’s 35th Anniversary bash, declaring her bisexuality in front of a star-studded crowd. “As a hometown girl, I’m always here to show my support for the community, which shaped so much of who I am and my identity as well, being a bi person,” the iconic actress from “Hocus Pocus” told Us Weekly.

She didn’t hold back, urging everyone to “find your community where you can, and stand with them, and stick with them, and share that love that you share together, and reach it toward others.” Birch emphasized that embracing one another is the only way to navigate through the chaos of today’s world. “We have to stop fighting,” she added, a call to arms for unity.

With roots planted firmly in West Hollywood—just a stone's throw from The Abbey—Birch has always been intertwined with the LGBTQ+ scene. A rep for the actress revealed that this beloved venue has been a gathering spot for decades, once frequented by screen legend Elizabeth Taylor herself.

In 2018, Birch tied the knot with director Michael Benton Adler, but her journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Reflecting on her rise to fame, she recently shared that growing up in the spotlight came with its own set of drawbacks. “You can’t develop friendships, or a core group of friends that stay with you,” she lamented in an interview. “So they were these amazing experiences, and opportunities to work with people that I had photos of on my bedroom walls.”

But would she trade it all? “No. But it has a heavy price.” Birch’s candidness about the toll of child stardom is refreshing, especially when discussing peers like Brittany Murphy and Brad Renfro, who tragically lost their lives too soon. “You can see the toll it takes to go through that transition from child star to working adult. It’s tough, and everybody reacts to it differently,” she explained.

What kept her grounded? A sense of humor and diversifying her experiences. “That was key,” she said. “Also dabbling in other mediums, taking a break, getting my education, living a life outside of any sort of bubble that has a camera pointed at it.” Birch believes that getting knocked down a few times is part of the process. “You need a few sunburns before you toughen your skin up.”

Birch is far from fading into obscurity; she’s thriving in Hollywood. Recently, she starred in Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut, “The Chronology of Water,” and is currently captivating audiences as Gifford Mayfair in AMC’s “Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches.”

In 2022, she made her directorial debut with Lifetime TV’s “The Gabby Petito Story” and is gearing up to direct the upcoming film adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s novel, “Mr. Paradise.” Thora Birch is not just surviving; she’s thriving—and now she’s doing it unapologetically as her true self.
