Tragic End: Former Child Star Daveigh Chase Dies from AIDS and Substance Abuse

Jun 29 2026

Daveigh Chase's death is a grim reminder of the dark side of fame, with her official cause of death confirmed as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), according to a Los Angeles County Medical Examiner report.

Chronic polysubstance use also contributed to her demise, defined as the simultaneous use of multiple drugs over a short period. This combination proved fatal.

The manner of death was ruled natural. Reports indicate she succumbed on June 16 after battling meningitis and severe blood infections that led to sepsis, as stated by her boyfriend Roy Hernandez.

Chase was admitted to a Los Angeles hospital earlier in June due to malnutrition, highlighting the severity of her health issues leading up to her death.

In the days before her passing, Hernandez initiated a GoFundMe campaign aimed at providing comfort for Chase during her critical condition, emphasizing the struggles she faced throughout her life.

Hernandez described Chase as a radiant presence in his life, known for her roles in “Lilo & Stitch,” “Spirited Away,” and “Donnie Darko.” He revealed the hardships she endured, including bullying and family estrangement, which plagued her since childhood.

At the time of the fundraiser's launch, doctors had warned Hernandez that Chase's condition was dire, indicating she had limited time left. He expressed a desire to create a sense of home and peace for her in her final days.

Chase rose to fame in 2002 with significant roles in Disney's “Lilo & Stitch” and the horror film “The Ring,” the latter earning her an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain. Her career included appearances in HBO’s “Big Love,” “Donnie Darko,” “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” and more.

She stepped away from the public eye after her last appearance in 2016’s “American Romance.”

Chase was 35 years old at the time of her death.
