Trump Calls NATO Support "Absurd" as Tensions Rise
President Trump unleashed a barrage of criticism, labeling the U.S. commitment to NATO as "ridiculous." His outburst came just days before a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.
On his Truth Social platform, he declared, "They were not there for us!!!" and claimed Washington's ties with NATO lack reciprocity.
Trump has consistently attacked European allies for their handling of the war in Iran, particularly after several nations limited U.S. military access to their bases. Notably, he failed to consult these allies before making decisions that impacted their security and economic stability.
The president hinted at a potential U.S. exit from NATO, although such a move would require Congressional approval.
He maintains that Europe should assume responsibility for its own defense while the U.S. reduces its commitments. His recent post featured a chart illustrating NATO spending, highlighting the stark contrast between U.S. contributions and those of other member states.
Under Trump's pressure, NATO leaders agreed last year to increase defense spending to five percent of GDP by 2035.
The upcoming NATO summit will convene 32 member states in Turkey on Tuesday and Wednesday.
NATO, established in 1949, evolved into a U.S.-led defense coalition that has been pivotal in maintaining European stability and countering Soviet influence, reinforcing Washington's global power for decades.
