Trump Demands Removal of Mary Peltola from Alaska Senate Race Amid Spoiler Candidate Allegations
President Donald Trump unleashed a tirade on Wednesday, demanding that Alaska Democratic Senate nominee Mary Peltola be yanked from the ballot. His outrage stems from a report alleging that Democrats orchestrated a scheme to siphon votes from incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska).
“In Alaska, I don’t think Mary Peltola, after perpetrating such a terrible scheme, should be allowed to run, because this is ELECTION FRAUD,” Trump declared on his Truth Social page. He accused Democrats of cheating by recruiting a candidate named Dan Sullivan to confuse voters and claimed they lied in court about their knowledge of the situation, labeling it perjury.
Trump's comments were sparked by a New York Times report detailing how Democratic operatives allegedly sought out “spoiler” candidates to dilute Sullivan's support. This included identifying individuals with the same name as the incumbent senator.
One such candidate, retired Petersburg teacher Dan J. Sullivan, announced his run earlier this year. He expressed his desire for change in an interview with Courthouse News last week. Both Peltola’s campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee denied any involvement in his candidacy, asserting they did not recruit additional candidates.
Last week, the Trump administration escalated the situation by filing a lawsuit aimed at blocking the certification of Alaska’s U.S. Senate race if Senator Sullivan loses.
“Mary Peltola should suffer the Legal and Political consequences for what she has done, A FRAUD ON THE AMERICAN PUBLIC, and Dan Sullivan should be allowed to run without either Mary Peltola or FAKE Dan Sullivan on the Ballot,” Trump reiterated in another post on Truth Social.
Despite Trump's claims of election fraud, the practice of recruiting spoiler candidates raises ethical concerns but remains legal.
