Trump’s Birthday Bash: A Cringe-Fest of Authoritarian Delusions and Dismal Poll Numbers

President Donald Trump celebrated his 80th birthday by indulging in Ultimate Fighting Championship bouts, showcasing his relentless pursuit of self-interest while the nation grapples with pressing economic issues.

A survey released by Navigator Research indicates that Trump's authoritarian tendencies are not just a spectacle; they are dragging down his already dismal popularity. The public perceives him as fixated on personal whims rather than addressing their economic concerns.

The poll reveals that 56% of registered voters disapproved of Trump hosting the UFC event, with only 28% supporting it. This net -28 approval rating marks one of the less unpopular of Trump's recent authoritarian actions. In stark contrast, unveiling a 22-foot gold statue of himself at Mar-a-Lago received a staggering -44 approval; his face on passports and a hypothetical $250 bill garnered -38; awarding a no-bid contract to repaint the Reflecting Pool was met with -36; and constructing a 250-foot triumphal arch landed at -34.

However, Trump's most controversial move—tearing down the East Wing of the White House to build a ballroom funded by $1 billion in taxpayer money—struck a nerve. A whopping 65% of registered voters opposed this project, while only 22% supported it. Focus groups conducted by Navigator revealed that swing voters are acutely aware of Trump's plans for what is now an empty lot.

Melissa Toufanian, managing director of Navigator Research, stated, “The ballroom is such a representation of how the elite and those around the president are getting ahead, while average people are struggling to get by.” She highlighted the disconnect between public priorities and Trump's focus, noting that citizens want attention on inflation and living costs, yet see anything but that.

The poll found that 58% of registered voters believe it is crucial for the president and Republicans in Congress to prioritize inflation and cost of living, but only 20% think Trump and the GOP are addressing these issues.

Even among MAGA-aligned Republicans, a significant number expressed concern over Trump's focus. About 31% criticized the ballroom project, 29% disapproved of the gold statues, and 24% were against his face on passports and the theoretical $250 bill.

Voters cited various reasons for their disapproval of Trump's actions, including wasting taxpayer dollars, enabling corruption, and making poor decisions for the country.

Overall, Trump's net approval rating stands at -18, with an even worse -23 on economic issues. Only 20% of the public approves of his handling of gas prices, with MAGA-aligned Republicans also expressing dissatisfaction with his performance.

Despite Trump's economic struggles, the Democratic advantage over the GOP remains minimal. Voters prefer Democrats on gas prices by a narrow margin of 37% to 32%, and support Democrats on inflation by just 38% to 34%.

The survey was conducted by Global Strategy Group, a Democratic polling firm, involving 1,000 registered voters from June 4 to June 8. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
