Trump's so-called "Great American State Fair" is a farce, marred by empty grounds and a string of failures, yet he insists everything is going swimmingly. The event, meant to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary, has been plagued by embarrassing incidents, including melted ice cream and a lack of attendees.
On Truth Social, Trump posed a question to his followers: “Do you think people appreciate what a fantastic job we did in building and operating the Great American State Fair at the National Mall, packed with happy people, and everybody loving it?”
He followed up with a rhetorical jab at his opponents, claiming, “DO YOU THINK THAT OBUMA [sic] OR SLEEPY JOE BIDEN COULD HAVE DONE IT? THE ANSWER IS NO.”
However, the reality on the ground tells a different story. The event kicked off on Wednesday but has struggled to attract enough visitors to gauge public opinion accurately.
Before the fair even began, the Trump-aligned Freedom250 organization faced challenges attracting exhibitors and performers. Multiple musicians canceled their appearances after realizing they were misled about the event's affiliation with America250, the official organization sidelined by Trump.
Notably, artists like Martini McBride, The Commodores, and Bret Michaels all dropped out of the lineup. The only one who remained was Vanilla Ice, but even he failed to perform due to “inclement weather,” leading to the fair's closure for the day.
Democratic-led states also withdrew from staffing booths at the event, objecting to its MAGA-aligned messaging instead of the promised patriotic theme.
During the kickoff rally, Trump claimed America was “back” and “respected by everybody,” attributing this to his presidency. He later boasted that his speech attracted 45,000 attendees, a claim contradicted by video evidence.
The following morning, power outages caused ice cream to melt in the summer heat at the food hall. Photos from the fairgrounds show vast areas mostly empty. One striking image captured musician Jason Hershey performing in front of rows of vacant seats, with only two people in attendance.
Another photo depicts a small group of visitors inside a tent examining an automotive exhibit. Reports indicate that attendance numbers were “nowhere near” what Trump claimed, with many attendees only showing up to hear him speak.
The Washington Post noted that the crowd at Wednesday’s event “thinly covered an area about the length of the National Museum of American History,” smaller than some summer outdoor movie screenings.
The Great American State Fair has become a spectacle of failure rather than celebration.
