Trump Sparks Chaos with Meloni: "Restraining Order Needed" Meme

Jul 06 2026

President Donald Trump has thrown gasoline on his feud with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni by posting a meme on Truth Social that reads, "Restraining Order Needed," suggesting she is desperate for his attention.

This meme surfaced just weeks after Trump claimed Meloni had "begged" him for a photograph, igniting a diplomatic spat that had seemed to cool. The image shows Meloni gazing up at Trump, amplifying the mockery.

Meloni's office, the Italian Foreign Ministry, and both U.S. embassies were contacted for comments, but responses were not available outside normal working hours.

The meme was part of a barrage of posts from Trump over the weekend, indicating he is not ready to let the dispute die down.

Both leaders are set to meet at the upcoming NATO summit, marking their first face-to-face encounter since their public fallout.

What was once a strong political alliance has devolved into a series of public insults and accusations. Earlier this year, Meloni was dubbed the "Trump whisperer," even receiving a front-row seat at Trump's January 2025 inauguration.

The cracks in their relationship began to show in late March when Italy's Defense Ministry denied U.S. military aircraft access to the NATO air base at Sigonella without parliamentary approval. This decision reflected Italy's constitutional requirements and public opposition to the war that erupted following U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28.

In April, Trump escalated tensions by attacking Pope Leo XIV on Truth Social for condemning the war, labeling him "weak on crime." Meloni condemned Trump's remarks, stating, "I find President Trump's words toward the Holy Father unacceptable. The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church, and it is right and normal that he calls for peace and condemns all forms of war."

Trump retaliated in an interview with an Italian newspaper, calling Meloni "unacceptable" for her stance on Iran's nuclear capabilities. He expressed shock at her comments, claiming he had misjudged her bravery.

The latest meme marks a significant escalation in their ongoing feud that reignited after last month's G7 summit. Trump had told Italian broadcaster La7 that Meloni had "begged" for a photo with him, a claim he later reiterated on Truth Social.

"She wanted a picture with me so badly," Trump stated. "I wouldn't have taken it, but I felt sorry for her."

In response to Trump's comments, Italy's foreign minister canceled a planned visit to the U.S., while Meloni vehemently denied the allegation, calling it "completely made-up" and asserting that neither she nor Italy ever beg. She criticized Trump for treating allies more harshly than adversaries.

Trump doubled down, insisting Meloni had asked "over and over" for a photo to boost her approval ratings. He also criticized Italy's stance on U.S. military operations against Iran, claiming Meloni was struggling with her popularity due to Italy's non-involvement in the conflict.

"Now, after the United States defeated Iran militarily, she wants to be friends again in order to get her 'numbers up.' No thanks!!!" Trump declared, prompting another response from Meloni.

Meloni asserted that defending Italy's national interests was her duty and told Trump that her popularity was "none of your concern."

While Trump suggested Meloni's popularity was waning, polling data presents a more complex picture. Although her approval ratings have dipped from earlier highs, she remains one of Italy's most popular political figures.

Trump continues to be a divisive figure in U.S. politics, with approval ratings fluctuating significantly across different surveys. Recent polling indicates that both leaders enjoy similar levels of favorability among their respective electorates.

A YouGov survey revealed Trump's net favorability at -17.5 among registered U.S. voters, with 40.6 percent viewing him favorably and 58.1 percent unfavorably. In contrast, Meloni's net favorability rating stood at -17 in Italy, although she outperformed Trump in job approval ratings—44 percent compared to Trump's 36 percent in recent polls.
