Trump Unleashes Fury on Italian PM After She Dismisses His ‘Fabricated’ Claims

Jun 20 2026

President Trump unleashed a barrage of attacks on Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, asserting she “wants to be friends again.”

“Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni asked, over and over, for a picture with me during the G-7 meeting in France,” Trump declared on Truth Social, directly contradicting Meloni’s denial of his claim that she had “begged” for a photo.

He slammed her popularity in Italy, suggesting it plummeted because she rejected the United States, a nation that “truly loves and protects Italy,” particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions. He noted, “But so did NATO, for that matter!”

Trump accused Meloni of denying the U.S. access to Italy’s landing strips for potential military actions against Iran.

“Now, after the United States defeated Iran militarily, she wants to be friends again in order to get her ‘numbers up.’ No thanks!!!” he stated.

The diplomatic fallout ignited during the G7 meetings in Evian-les-Bains, France, where Trump told a journalist from Italy’s La7 TV that Meloni “wanted a picture with me so badly,” adding he “felt sorry for her.”

Meloni responded sharply, expressing her disbelief at Trump’s claims and stating, “I do not know why the president of the United States behaves this way toward his allies — it is certainly not the first time this has happened.”

She described Trump’s remarks as “made-up,” asserting, “Neither I nor Italy ever beg.”

The diplomatic spat led Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to cancel a planned U.S. visit set for the following week.

Relations between Trump and Meloni were initially warm when she assumed power in 2022 as the leader of the right-wing populist Brothers of Italy party.
