Viral Clip Sparks Debate on Christianity and MAGA Ideology
Jen Hamilton, a nurse from North Carolina, recently stirred the pot on social media with a video that has garnered millions of views. Two weeks ago, she picked up her Bible and addressed a pressing issue: the relationship between Christianity and the MAGA movement.
Before this video, Hamilton had sought advice from her followers on resources for those questioning their loyalty to MAGA. Among the responses, one stood out: “Whoa. Be careful now. I am happily MAGA and I love Jesus. We are exhausted from liberal nonsense.”

Rather than engage in a debate, Hamilton chose a different path. She sat at her kitchen table, opened her Bible, and began reading from Matthew 25, juxtaposing Jesus’ teachings with MAGA policies that contradict them. “I was hungry and you fed me,” she recited, as headlines about proposed cuts to food assistance flashed on screen.
“I was in prison and you visited me,” she continued, linking it to stories of deported migrants. “I was sick and you cared for me,” she added, referencing potential Medicaid cuts. Hamilton emphasized that Matthew 25 highlights the importance of serving those in need, warning that neglecting the vulnerable leads to judgment.
In her view, these teachings sound “pretty liberal.” The video has sparked a flurry of comments, with many praising her for using scripture to critique uncritical support for Trump among Christians. One comment read, “As a Christian, I don’t think you can be both MAGA and Christian.”
However, not all feedback has been positive. Hamilton reported receiving backlash from MAGA supporters, including attempts to report her to the Board of Nursing. “As a nurse, I don’t know how you don’t fight for the rights of the vulnerable communities you care for,” she stated.
She clarified that her video was not a political statement but a moral one, distinguishing between being a Republican and identifying with MAGA. “The hypocrisy of people claiming to follow Jesus while supporting a movement that harms those He called us to love is what I aimed to highlight,” Hamilton explained.
Critics argue she misrepresents scripture, yet Hamilton questions how that’s possible when she is simply quoting Jesus. The debate surrounding her video reflects broader tensions within American Christianity over the past five decades, according to Rev. Brandan Robertson, a pastor and author.

Robertson noted that the religious right has historically used conservative Christianity to bolster right-wing political agendas. He views the MAGA movement as the culmination of these efforts, effectively merging conservative values with Christian orthodoxy.
Interestingly, many Americans do not perceive Trump as particularly religious; a 2020 survey indicated that fewer than half believe he is Christian. Despite this, he maintains strong support among white evangelical Christians, with 72% approving of his presidency shortly after his inauguration.

Trump’s circle includes evangelical leaders like Paula White and William Wolfe, who have made controversial statements regarding immigration and social issues. However, Robertson argues that these figures do not represent the entirety of American Christianity.
“Many moderate and progressive Christians oppose the xenophobic policies promoted by the religious right,” he asserted. Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde has also voiced concerns about Trump’s impact on marginalized communities during her sermons.

While some Protestants are vocal critics of Trump’s administration, others within evangelical and Catholic circles have distanced themselves from MAGA rhetoric, emphasizing the spiritual dangers associated with it.
Robertson believes that many are working to redirect their fellow believers back to Christ rather than political ideologies. “Prophetic, progressive Christians devoted to Jesus’ teachings are rising up,” he said.

As Carrie McKean pointed out, some pastors support certain policies while still advocating for migrants’ rights. “Jesus was never trying to build a kingdom of this world,” she remarked, emphasizing that He transcends contemporary political labels.
Hamilton resonates with this sentiment. She expressed hope that her video prompts viewers to reconsider their political affiliations in light of their faith. “I’m not trying to turn everyone liberal; I just want to create a moment of pause for those entrenched in MAGA,” she said.
Ultimately, Hamilton’s message encourages reflection on how faith intersects with political beliefs, urging individuals to reconnect with their core values amidst the noise of partisan politics.
