Wall Street Holds Its Breath as Fed Decision Looms Amidst Market Turbulence

Oct 31 2026

U.S. stocks are in a precarious drift as the Federal Reserve gears up for a critical announcement on interest rates. The S&P 500 has edged up 0.2%, inching within 1% of its all-time high set earlier this month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 31 points, or 0.1%, while the Nasdaq composite rose by 0.3% as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time.

The spotlight today is firmly on the Federal Reserve's stance regarding interest rates. Last month, the Fed raised its main interest rate for the first time in three years, aiming to combat rampant inflation that’s squeezing the economy and impacting Americans broadly.

Wall Street anticipates that the Fed will maintain the federal funds rate at this meeting, but speculation swirls about potential hints regarding future moves. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh has been vocal about his desire for less guidance on upcoming decisions since taking office.

Interest rates are crucial for Wall Street, acting as a primary lever for stock pricing. Corporate profitability also plays a significant role, with more companies reporting earnings that exceed analysts’ expectations this week.

GE Healthcare Technologies surged by 8% after posting summer profits and revenues that surpassed forecasts, alongside an upward revision of its full-year revenue growth projections.

Etsy saw a 6.6% increase following a quarterly profit that blew past expectations. CEO Kruti Patel Goyal noted growth in active buyers for the first time in two years, with the active seller base expanding at its fastest rate in the same period.

Stocks in the artificial intelligence sector showed resilience this week after experiencing volatility due to concerns over high borrowing costs linked to elevated interest rates potentially undermining AI data center growth, which relies heavily on borrowed funds.

A significant boost came from South Korea’s SK Hynix, which soared 10.9% in Seoul after reporting strong profits. The memory chip manufacturer indicated it is experiencing a positive cycle driven by rising AI usage, predicting demand will continue to outstrip supply through 2030.

On Wall Street, Micron Technology climbed 5.2%, becoming a key contributor to the S&P 500's upward movement, as it also specializes in computer memory.

This uptick helped mitigate a 3.2% decline for Robinhood Markets, which reported disappointing profit and revenue figures for the latest quarter.

Boston Scientific plummeted by 11.1%, despite reporting a smaller-than-expected profit drop for the latest quarter. The company’s forecast for current quarter profits fell short of analysts’ expectations.

In the bond market, Treasury yields remained stable ahead of the Fed's announcement. The yield on the 10-year Treasury held at 4.99%, consistent with late Tuesday's figures.

This yield is near its peak range since it began climbing from 3.97%, influenced by rising oil prices and inflation concerns stemming from geopolitical tensions. It has retreated from earlier highs above 5.30%, marking its highest level since 2002.

Oil prices increased amid ongoing uncertainty regarding developments in the Middle East and their impact on the global energy market. Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose by 1.8% to $111.33 per barrel.

Internationally, South Korea’s Kospi led gains with a 6.6% jump following SK Hynix's performance. Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose by 1.1%, while France’s CAC 40 added 0.2%.
