AMERICAN WOMAN DENA KARARI RETURNS AFTER 566 DAYS OF WRONGFUL DETENTION IN IRAN

Jul 19 2026

An American woman, Dena Karari, has touched down in the US after a staggering 566 days of wrongful detention in Iran on espionage charges. Her attorney broke the news of her return.

Karari, who wore an American flag draped over her shoulders, arrived in San Francisco. This moment was captured in a photo shared by her human rights lawyer on Saturday.

“Welcome home Dena Karari from Iran to the land of the free and the home of the brave— after 566 days wrongly detained by the Iranian regime,” attorney Jared Genser posted on X. He expressed gratitude to everyone involved in her release, emphasizing the need to intensify efforts to free other Americans still trapped abroad.

Karari, an Iranian-American, faced detention by Iranian authorities in December 2024. Reports indicate she worked for a US technology firm and operated a charity for children in Iran.

Despite her release from prison, both of her passports were confiscated, which barred her from leaving the country until now.

President Trump announced her release as a “gesture of goodwill” from Iran. He stated on Truth Social that “Iran has allowed an American Citizen, who was wrongfully detained in December of 2024 under the ‘presidency’ of Sleepy Joe Biden, to leave the Country.”

He confirmed that she is now safely outside of Iran and in good condition, thanking Iran for this gesture.
