Bolsonaro Claims 'Leadership' After Escaping Brazil, Touching Down in Miami

Oct 29 2026

Defeated Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, refusing to concede defeat, has landed in Miami after a chaotic escape from Brazil. He fled the country with his family, claiming victimhood in a supposed electoral fraud.

Bolsonaro's journey began with a flight to Argentina, where he crossed the border with his wife and two daughters before boarding a private charter to Ecuador. Flight data confirms he arrived in Guayaquil around 4 a.m. local time before heading to Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport.

His father, Jair Bolsonaro, also fled to Florida after losing the 2022 election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, returning three months later. Flávio Bolsonaro is currently under investigation by Brazil’s Supreme Court for corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion. The court demanded he surrender his passports by noon Tuesday; it remains unclear if he complied. Allies claim he possesses an Italian passport.

In his first statement after arriving in Miami, Bolsonaro declared himself the victim of a criminal organization that he alleges stole the election. He told his supporters he is the president-elect, later modifying his claim to “leader.”

Bolsonaro stepped off the plane dressed casually in a dark polo shirt, flanked by his family. Florida hosts the largest Brazilian population in the U.S., making it a strategic refuge for him.

The family’s escape involved entering Argentina through a border checkpoint before quickly boarding their private flight. Lula, who turned 81 on the same day, expressed regret over Bolsonaro's departure, stating it was shameful and that he could have stayed to contest the accusations against him.

Bolsonaro's route through Argentina could escalate diplomatic tensions between Lula’s administration and Argentine President Javier Milei, a Trump ally who previously supported Bolsonaro's campaign. Milei’s spokesperson claimed they rescued Bolsonaro from “the claws of communism.”

Trump welcomed Bolsonaro to the U.S., labeling him and his family as “fine people.” He echoed sentiments about the election being “strange” and “rigged,” though he provided no evidence for these claims.

When asked about Bolsonaro's assertion of being the rightful president-elect, Trump refrained from commenting but confirmed he granted Bolsonaro a “pass” to enter the country.

Global leaders and the Organization of American States have recognized Lula's victory, which came by approximately 4.4 million votes in the final round. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on Brazil, which is Latin America's largest economy. Lula has strengthened ties with China and sought greater influence through BRICS.

Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his Brazilian passports earlier this week. He claimed to have received this order outside his father's residence, where Jair Bolsonaro is under house arrest for attempting a coup following his election loss.

A Brazilian diplomat revealed that Flávio Bolsonaro used an Italian passport to enter Argentina and noted that Brazilians leaving via land borders face minimal scrutiny from authorities. The federal police were not monitoring him during his departure as no arrest warrant had been issued.

Flávio Bolsonaro stated he was organizing opposition among congressional colleagues against the election results. His term as senator ends on January 31, 2027. His Liberal Party has publicly accepted the election outcome.

The Supreme Court is investigating allegations that Bolsonaro used a sports betting company to launder fraudulent deductions from government pensions for seniors. He also faces accusations of accepting millions from a disgraced banker. Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing.
