Brit Dad Dies After Sudden Health Crisis at Airport Following Turkey Holiday

Jul 06 2026

David Kelly's health plummeted at the airport, transforming a supposed vacation into a catastrophic ordeal.

What began as a "relaxing holiday in Turkey" spiraled into chaos when he fell gravely ill just hours before his flight home. The joiner experienced a rapid decline in health, leading to an emergency rush into intensive care.

In a matter of hours, he was placed in an induced coma, fighting for his life thousands of miles away from home. His wife, Dawn, remained steadfastly by his side in a Turkish hospital for four weeks, refusing to leave him during this harrowing battle.

A fundraiser initiated with the family's consent described the shocking turn of events. It stated: "Just hours before his flight home, David suddenly became seriously unwell at the airport. Within a matter of hours, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and he was rushed to intensive care."

David was kept alive on life support while his wife provided unwavering support. The couple faced this nightmare together, with Dawn never leaving his side as he fought with incredible strength.

Originally from Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland, David was finally flown back home on 8 June aboard a specialized flying intensive care unit. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

Despite receiving "outstanding care" from hospital staff, David's struggle continued. Tragically, he passed away peacefully on 18 June, surrounded by family.

The fundraiser announced: "Despite everyone's best efforts, our warrior David passed away peacefully on 18 June, surrounded by his loving family."

His family shared the heartbreaking news through his business's Facebook page, Barrhead Joinery. They expressed their sorrow: "We would like to share the devastating news that sadly after fighting as hard as he could, our lovable, amazing David Kelly passed away on Thursday 18th June."

They also announced the cessation of Barrhead Joinery's operations and thanked the community for their support over the years.

David was remembered as a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. The fundraiser highlighted his selflessness: "He was someone who was always there to lend a hand, offer support, and put others before himself."

Tributes poured in from the local community. Noreen McHugh expressed her devastation: "I am devastated to hear this sad news about Davie. He was an excellent professional who I counted on over the years. But upmost a wonderful human being who was always friendly and honest."

Another individual shared their condolences: "David did some work for me when I moved into my home in Newton Mearns some years ago. Such a lovely, lovely man. Sending you all my heartfelt condolences."

A fundraising campaign has been established to alleviate the financial burden of David's emergency medical care overseas and specialist repatriation. Funds will also assist Dawn and the family with funeral costs and provide donations to Kidney Research UK and the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

The appeal emphasized that contributions would acknowledge the "exceptional care and compassion" shown towards David and his loved ones.
