Deb Haaland Claims Democratic Nomination for New Mexico Governor, Eyes Historic Win

Jun 03 2026

Deb Haaland has clinched the Democratic primary in New Mexico’s governor race, according to projections.

She steps into the general election as the frontrunner, aiming to replace term-limited Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham. In a state devoid of Republican statewide officeholders, her victory could mark a historic moment as the first Native American woman to govern.

Haaland triumphed over Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman, who is also the father of Chicago Cubs star third baseman Alex Bregman, to secure the Democratic nomination.

In November, she will face Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull, who emerged victorious in the GOP gubernatorial primary.

Her campaign emphasizes its potential historical significance, showcasing her ancestral roots and running advertisements in the Diné language.

Previously, Haaland served as former President Joe Biden’s interior secretary throughout his four-year term. She made history as the first Native American woman elected to Congress, representing the Albuquerque area for one term and also chaired the state Democratic Party.

“Deb is a fierce champion for New Mexico, who has secured millions of dollars in investment and thousands of good-paying jobs, while strengthening the state’s economy and preserving natural resources for generations to come,” stated Democratic Governors Association Chair and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. “She knows the pain New Mexicans are feeling right now, which is why she will never stop fighting to bring down costs and create jobs, strengthen schools, expand affordable health care, and create safer communities.”

Before her victory, Haaland indicated a strategy focused on critiquing President Donald Trump and his policies during the general election.

“We’re in a horrible era right now with our federal government, and people see that the policies that Donald Trump is inflicting on New Mexicans are having a very negative effect all over the state,” she remarked.

“Everybody deserves to have health care, deserves to eat healthy food,” she continued. “They need somebody who understands what it’s like, and they want somebody who knows how to find solutions to these issues.”

New Mexico ranks among states with high enrollments in Medicaid and federal food assistance programs. Both initiatives faced significant cuts under the “One Big Beautiful Bill” signed by Trump last year.

Despite Biden's declining approval ratings following his withdrawal from the 2024 re-election bid, Haaland has expressed strong support for him. She described him as “absolutely an asset” to her campaign and praised him as a “true partner” to New Mexico and Indigenous communities nationwide. Her campaign frequently highlights her achievements as interior secretary related to conservation and renewable energy projects in the American Southwest, though her advertisements do not mention Biden directly.
