Donald Trump and Melania’s Separate Bedrooms: A Battle of Decor and Distance
Donald Trump and Melania Trump sleep in separate rooms, a bizarre arrangement that has sparked claims of a decorating rivalry. The President is reportedly "determined" to outshine his wife in their home decor, as detailed in a new book by New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan.
The book, titled Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump, chronicles the first year of his second term. It reveals that Melania occupies the master bedroom while Trump has taken over a former living room.
Despite this odd setup, Trump, known for his late-night social media rants, is eager to claim victory in their home decor battle. This comes after reports surfaced that Melania objected to Elon Musk's presence at the White House.

According to Haberman and Swan, Trump is "determined to have the better room," which Will Pavia from The Times describes as a "decorating arms race." Trump allegedly removed gold pieces chosen by Melania from the hallway and brought them into his own bedroom, likened to a magpie hoarding shiny objects.
Rumors about their sleeping arrangements are not new. In Michael Wolff's 2018 book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, it was claimed that Trump found the White House "vexing" and retreated to his own bedroom. This marked the first time since the Kennedy era that a presidential couple maintained separate sleeping quarters.
Trump dismissed Wolff's book as "really boring and untruthful." Biographer Mary Jordan, who spoke with White House staff, noted that "Trump love is really complicated." She stated that they spend an astonishing amount of time apart, yet he often calls her immediately after speeches or rallies.

Jordan emphasized the unusual nature of their relationship: "I don’t know any couple that spends as much time apart. They are often in the same building, but nowhere near each other." Melania rarely visits the West Wing.
Melania is described as a loner who prefers isolation. She avoids golf and enjoys her own spa. Both she and Trump seem content with their separation.
The couple met in 1998 and married in 2005, sharing one son, Barron Trump. Reflecting on their initial encounter in 2016, Melania revealed that Trump was "with a date" at the time. She recounted how he wanted her number but she refused, insisting he provide his first.

Melania wanted to gauge the type of number he would give her, stating, "If it was a business number, 'What is this? I’m not doing business with you'." She claimed Trump provided all his contact numbers: office, Mar-a-Lago, home in New York—everything.
She also expressed admiration for Trump's energy, noting his "amazing sense of vitality."
