Florida Governor DeSantis Approves Bill to Rename Palm Beach Airport After Trump
On Monday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis enacted legislation that will change the name of Palm Beach International Airport to honor the state's most notable resident: former President Donald Trump, whose Mar-a-Lago estate is located nearby.
The new designation, effective July 1, will officially be known as the President Donald J. Trump International Airport.
Supporters of the bill expressed their enthusiasm, viewing it as a significant tribute to Trump. “This historic recognition celebrates a President who made Florida his home and saved our great Nation,” stated Florida state Rep. Meg Weinberger on X. “Thank you to everyone who worked tirelessly to make this moment possible as we honor President Trump’s legacy and his extraordinary contributions to America.”
Eric Trump, the former president's son, also shared his pride in the development, stating on X, “Proud to have played a small role in making this happen.”

In a related move, Florida Congressman Brian Mast introduced a companion bill last week. “President Donald J. Trump’s impact on our nation will transcend our time—a historic legacy of dedication and commitment toward the American people,” Mast remarked in a statement. “He’s called Palm Beach County ‘home’ for many years, and this designation reflects our gratitude for his public service and leadership.”
The name change will now be forwarded to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which is responsible for updating transit systems to reflect the new name.
“Changing an airport name is a local issue and the FAA does not approve airport name changes,” an agency spokesperson clarified. “However, the FAA must complete some administrative tasks that include updating navigational charts and databases.”
Opponents of the name change criticized the decision, especially in light of Trump's previous associations with various institutions in Washington D.C., including the Kennedy Center and the U.S. Institute of Peace. A federal lawsuit is currently underway seeking to remove Trump's name from the Kennedy Center, claiming it was added without proper congressional approval.

“Life keeps getting more expensive for working families and seniors in Florida,” Florida House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell stated. “Instead of working across the aisle with us to advance those bills, Republican leaders decided to prioritize wasting five million of your taxpayer dollars on renaming an airport after the President.”
As the airport prepares for its new name, it will also feature an updated “DJT” airport code. However, Trump's administration faces scrutiny over recent air travel issues, including delays and long lines attributed to a partial government shutdown.
The newly named Trump International Airport will connect to Donald J. Trump Boulevard, a road linking the airport to Mar-a-Lago.
Earlier this year, White House communications director Steven Cheung expressed support for the Florida law, noting that Trump International Airport "has a GREAT ring to it." Reports suggest that there are efforts behind the scenes to rename Dulles International Airport in Washington D.C. after Trump.

The White House has been contacted for comments regarding the airport's name change.
Additionally, the Trump Organization has sought to trademark Donald Trump's name for use in airports and other travel-related venues. They assert that the president’s family will not receive any financial benefits from this effort but aims to protect his name from misuse.
Political figures from both parties have had airports named in their honor; for instance, Las Vegas features Harry Reid International Airport, while Ronald Reagan National Airport serves the U.S. capital area. Typically, such honors are reserved for individuals who are no longer in office or alive.
Earlier this month, a government commission with ties to Trump approved a design for a commemorative gold coin featuring his portrait, despite a tradition against depicting living individuals on U.S. currency.

In another unprecedented move, the Treasury Department announced that all newly printed U.S. paper currency will carry Trump's signature, marking a first for any sitting president.
