Gavin Newsom and Xavier Becerra Caught in a Secretive San Francisco Meeting at Mexican Joint

Jun 25 2026

California Governor Gavin Newsom and gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra met at a Mexican restaurant in San Francisco, stirring controversy and raising eyebrows.

Newsom posted photos on X, showcasing the two Democrats shaking hands and seated at a table in the empty establishment.

The meeting took place at Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant, which claims to be “family owned and operated” and specializes in Yucatan cuisine.

Known for its margaritas, chile relleno, and pollo pibil, it remains unclear if the two consumed any food during their meeting. Photos reveal only two glasses that appear to be water on their table.

Newsom’s office and Becerra’s campaign were contacted for comments regarding the meeting.

The agenda reportedly included discussions on healthcare, housing, the economy, small businesses, abortion, climate issues, and the Trump administration. This marked their first meeting since the June primary election.

“Focused on the work. Committed to the people,” Newsom stated on X alongside the images.

Becerra echoed similar sentiments, stating, “We’ve fought side by side for California families — and together, we’re going to keep this state moving forward.”

Becerra is positioned as the likely successor to Newsom, who is term-limited and eyeing a presidential run in 2028. Becerra, previously the Health and Human Services chief under President Joe Biden, faces Republican Steve Hilton in a solidly blue state.

Prior to the primary, Newsom hesitated to endorse any candidate in the crowded Democratic field, even dodging questions from reporters about Becerra. Once it became evident that Becerra was the only Democratic candidate advancing to the general election, Newsom quickly threw his support behind him.

California Republicans did not hold back their criticism of the meetup.

“They go to a restaurant in a city neither of them live in, clear out the customers, and not eat,” the California GOP posted on X. “Californians are tired of manufactured photo ops with do-nothing, all-talk politicians while our state gets more expensive and worse to live in.”

“Focused on the work. Committed to the people,” Newsom posted on X along with the photos.
