Global Allies Shun Trump's Call to Action in the Strait of Hormuz

U.S. allies are pushing back against President Trump’s requests for assistance in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route, as tensions escalate due to the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. Despite Trump’s insistence that “we no longer need” their help, the response from European and other global partners has been decidedly lukewarm.

In a contradictory statement, Trump claimed on Monday that “numerous countries” were already “on the way” to provide support, yet he refrained from naming any of these nations.

Allies appear less inclined to offer help when faced with consistent insults. “They should be in here very happily helping us,” Trump remarked to reporters, emphasizing that they ought to be eager to assist given the U.S. has supported them for years.

However, his tone shifted dramatically on social media the following day. “Speaking as President of the United States of America, by far the Most Powerful Country Anywhere in the World, WE DO NOT NEED THE HELP OF ANYONE!” he declared.

European Union Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas expressed a stark reality: “Nobody is ready to put their people in harm’s way in the Strait of Hormuz.” She emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions to prevent potential crises related to food, fertilizers, and energy.

Kallas also mentioned that the EU is open to exploring arrangements similar to those that facilitated grain exports from Ukraine during its conflict, indicating that the United Nations is already engaged in discussions.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made it clear that Greece would not participate in military operations near Iran. “Greece is not going to participate in any operation around the theater of current operations,” he stated at a Bloomberg event in Athens, adding that there seems to be little European enthusiasm for such missions at this time.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius reiterated this sentiment, stating, “The Americans chose this path, together with the Israelis,” and underscored Germany’s commitment to defending NATO territory rather than engaging in conflicts outside its borders. “We did not start this war,” he added.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz further clarified that NATO’s role is defensive, asserting, “NATO has no place here at all.”

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has acknowledged the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz for market stability but has stopped short of committing British resources. “Ultimately, we have to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to ensure stability in the [oil] market. That is not a simple task,” he noted.

Starmer emphasized collaboration with allies to devise a viable plan for restoring navigation freedom in the region while mitigating economic repercussions.

Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen expressed a desire for a coordinated European response but remained cautious about direct involvement. “Even if we don’t like what’s going on, I think it’s wise to keep an open mind on whether Europe ... can contribute, but with a view towards de-escalation,” he stated.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would not engage in immediate operations to reopen Hormuz but might reconsider if conditions improve. “We are not party to the conflict,” he affirmed during a defense council meeting.

Spain’s defense and foreign affairs ministers categorically dismissed any involvement in Hormuz operations. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares described the situation as a “spiral of violence” lacking clear objectives, while Defense Minister Margarita Robles stated, “Spain is not considering any mission in Hormuz. What we are considering is the demand that the war end.”

Australia's Transport Minister Catherine King also confirmed that her country would not contribute to Trump’s crisis response. “We won’t be sending a ship to the Strait of Hormuz,” she stated, acknowledging its significance but clarifying that Australia has not been asked for assistance.
