Trump Attacks ‘Low IQ’ Gavin ‘Newscum,’ Questions His Presidential Qualifications

Mar 17 2026

President Trump launched a fresh barrage against California Governor Gavin Newsom, targeting the governor's dyslexia as a disqualifying factor for the presidency. “Honestly, I'm all for people with learning disabilities, but not for my president,” Trump stated during a press interaction at the White House on Monday.

“I think a president should not have learning disabilities,” he continued, dismissing Newsom with a series of insults. The president referred to Newsom as “Gavin Newscum,” asserting that “everything about him is dumb.”

In a moment of irony, Trump suggested that Newsom was already acting as “the president of the United States,” a slip that Newsom later ridiculed on social media. “NO THANK YOU, WE BELIEVE IN FREE ELECTIONS!” the California governor quipped on X.

These comments coincided with Trump’s announcement of a task force aimed at combating alleged benefits fraud, particularly in California. This follows previous claims of widespread fraud linked to an immigration operation in Minneapolis earlier this year.

Critics quickly condemned Trump's remarks as offensive and inappropriate. California journalist Carla Marinucci expressed her dismay on X, stating, “Regarding millions of Americans with disabilities, Trump once again shows his profound ignorance.”

In contrast, White House spokesman Davis Ingle supported Trump’s stance, declaring, “Gavin Newscum is the worst governor in America, and he also may be the dumbest.”

Trump's recent comments echo his previous criticisms of Newsom made during a rally in Kentucky. “He admitted he has mental problems, that he's not a smart person…that he is unable to read a speech,” Trump told supporters in Hebron. “I don't want the president of the United States to have a cognitive deficiency.”

Newsom responded with a sharp retort online: “Too late,” referencing ongoing claims from Trump critics regarding the president's mental fitness, which Trump vehemently denies.

Following these exchanges, Eric Garcia, an autistic reporter and advocate for disability rights, highlighted Trump's history of derogatory remarks about disabilities. He recalled an infamous incident from 2015 when Trump mocked a disabled reporter. “Blatant and disgusting ableism on the level of Trump mocking Serge Kovaleski,” Garcia remarked on X.

As Newsom promotes his new memoir ahead of a potential 2028 presidential run, he has criticized Trump for inciting “MAGA-manufactured outrage.” Recently, conservatives accused Newsom of racism after he shared his own struggles with dyslexia during an event in Atlanta.

“You didn't give a s*** about the President of the United States of America posting an ape video of President Obama or calling African nations s***holes — but you're going to call me racist for talking about my lifelong struggle with dyslexia?” Newsom fired back at Fox News host Sean Hannity.

The rivalry between Newsom and Trump has intensified over time, with both figures clashing over immigration policies and Trump's threats to withhold wildfire aid. As tensions rise, Newsom has adopted Trump's combative social media tactics.
