GOP Representative Signals Party's 'Civil War' If Trump Exits NATO: 'It Would Crumble'

Republican Representative Don Bacon issued a stark warning about the potential for a "civil war" within the party should President Donald Trump pursue a withdrawal from NATO. He emphasized the necessity of reinforcing ties with European allies that have been strained during Trump's presidency.

During an appearance on CNN, Bacon reflected on NATO's historical support, noting that member nations "went to war on our behalf after 9/11," while suggesting that Trump "seems to forget that" crucial fact.

"From day one, he's talked down to our NATO allies. When you treat your allies with disrespect, you can't expect them to respond positively," Bacon remarked, underscoring the importance of mutual respect in international relations.

He urged the president to focus on "strengthening our alliances," asserting that "strong friendships lead to greater cooperation," particularly in the context of providing assistance in the ongoing conflict with Iran.

When questioned about Trump's assertion that he could exit NATO without congressional consent, Bacon responded with a dire warning. "If he were to dismantle NATO unilaterally, it would spark a civil war within the Republican conference. Most of us would find it completely unacceptable. I’m not alone in this sentiment," he stated. "Such an action would likely devastate the party for years; it would implode."

On Tuesday, Trump criticized NATO members, claiming the U.S. no longer requires their support after several nations declined his request to form a multinational coalition to escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and ensure the uninterrupted flow of oil amid the conflict in Iran.

Addressing reporters at the Oval Office, he described these rejections as a "very foolish mistake." "Everyone agrees with us, but they don't want to help. We, as the United States, must remember this because it's quite shocking," he added.

Earlier, he had taken to social media to assert, "Due to our significant military success, we no longer 'need,' or desire, the NATO countries' assistance _ WE NEVER DID!"
