GOP Senator Rips Trump’s ‘Anti-Weaponization Fund’ as Absurd Cash Grab

May 22 2026

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) didn’t hold back when he unleashed a verbal barrage against President Donald Trump’s nearly $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund,” labeling it a blatant cash grab for Trump’s inner circle.

In a fiery exchange with Spectrum News 1’s Reuben Jones, Tillis slammed the fund as “stupid on stilts.”

“This fund will inevitably lead to taxpayer dollars being funneled to individuals who assaulted police officers, admitted their guilt, got convicted, and then received pardons. Now we’re expected to pay them? That’s just absurd,” he declared.

The Department of Justice recently announced the fund as part of a settlement to resolve Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS over the leak of his tax returns. But critics are already branding it a slush fund for those who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“The American people are going to reject this fund,” Tillis asserted, referring to the January 6 rioters as “thugs that should still be in prison and should remain there for as long as the law allows.”

He didn’t stop there, condemning the very idea that these individuals could be eligible for payouts as “the definition of tyranny.”

“When you take money from me to give to a purpose I vehemently oppose, that’s tyranny, and that’s exactly what this account represents,” he added, making it clear where he stands.

Tillis also took aim at acting Attorney General Todd Blanche for not ruling out compensation for those who assaulted police officers during the Capitol riot, calling his earlier comments “objectionable” and “insulting.”
